Do I put the word in the book and just hit combine? What is the quill and piece of parchment for? I read so many links but cannot find an answer.

For the new recipes add a quill and parchment to the words
The old ones just require the necessary words

Spells level 16 to 49 only require the words/runes/pages/components (can be combined in old or new research books)

Spells level 50 to 60 require the words/runes/pages/components PLUS 1 Quill and 1 Parchment for each combine (must be combined in new research no drop book from Gunthak)

Quills and parchments are sold by vendors in caster guilds (they also sell the old research books and reagents). There is a list of these vendors here.
