  • What are you all doing to make profits with this skill?

I skilled up my research to 200. I am looking for ways I might be able to utilize this skill for profit. I was not able to find a single component for sale in the bazaar on my server (The Rathe). What other ways are you all making money with this skill.

I was thinking of offering to do combines for people. But I don't know if I should ask for donations, charge a flat fee, or a percentage of the market value of the spell. What are you thoughts or idea on useing this skill for profit.

Thanks for responding and the advise beforehand.

The problem is, any lvl 56+ can get 200 research with no work (if they didn't use up prac points), so there will be a ton of folks out there. Chances are anybody that needs a 50+ spell researched will be in a guild with at least one 56+ lvl int caster that can do it.

You might be able to sell finished spells if you can collect the parts... but thats a pain in itself.

I have sold the the spell "Illusion Vah Shir" for 25k twice already. I have a third on my trader.
I have paid between 5pp to 800pp for each page and have failed 1 out of 4 attempts. 200 skill + 5% mod.

Just keep your eyes open for components that are used in the hard to get spells.
Illusion Vah Shir, although pointless, was one of the rarest spells in the game. As soon as everyone realizes it can be researched, the price will plummet. This will happen with a lot of rare spells.

My chanter has made 4 copies of the 55 Druid spell Nature Walkers Behest, with a skill of 185 research plus Geerlok.

I have sold all 4 of em easily in bazaar for 4k each, so skill does pay off if you can aquire the right components

I have both components for Illusion: Vah Shir, but will wait on that one till skill 200, because I do not want to fail, hehe

I acquired the page needed for levitation, and found someone in the bazaar offering to do combines for tips/donations. He made my spell, and I gave him all my cash (like 340p).

So, you can do it for tips/donations. Or, if you have a good idea what spells are insanely rare, you can look for the parts for them. Or, you can try to acquire the parts and make what you can at the time. I cannot speak for the other classes, but the following are vastly overpriced shaman spells on my server: Everlasting breath [nfs], levitation [nfs], primal essence [nfs], remove greater curse [nfs], bane of nife, pox of bertox, tigirs insects (it is a suicide spell on top of that), avatar, primal avatar [nfs](well, it is no drop from sleepers tomb), malo and torpor. note: [nfs] = never for sale at any price. Malo, tigirs and torpor are like 30k to 100k. EB and levitation are lore, so don't make too many at one time. I suspect RGC is also lore, since remove curse is lore.

Personally, I set my sights a bit lower. With my nec at a research skill of 185 (cap for her level at 52), I buy words off NPC vendors and sometimes in bazaar and combine the lower level spells, and sell them on my bazaar mule. It's not fast and it's not BIG money, but it helps my pocketbook. I seldom haggle on prices on my spells that I am selling, figuring that if I went to the effort to get my skill up, find the parts and make the spells, I can charge whatever I feel is reasonable--but I always do combines for free or whatever donation anyone feels like providing if they supply the words.

            Anyhow, it works =)

I've wanted Illusion: Vah Shir forever, and between a friend and myself (thanks PC!) came up with enough components to make 6 attempts. Succeeded on 5 out of 6 (169 skill + 5% modifier) attempts - scribed a copy and the two of us split the other two and sold/traded them - actually managed to trade a copy of VS for Froglok, and also traded one copy for some gear upgrades. I also am trying to find components for rarer spells, to combine and then sell on my trader (or to round out my own spellbook, or for friends).

I've also done combines for donations.

Illusion: Vah Shir is a popular spell, and the components aren't that hard to get. I'll do combines for free for anyone who brings me the pieces (or at least, for any ENCHANTER who brings me the pieces) and I've distributed like 6 copies into my guild by now, but I've also sold two for the disturbing price of 2500 plat EACH. o.o;; (This is what happens to me when I think to myself "I'm not sure if I REALLY want to sell this, so I'll just set the price high...")

                  crossover use of research

I know this may just sound weird, but I am so that fits. I use my research skill for tailoring.

I vendor mine or bazaar mine (only if priced under 10 pp each) the 18 old research items that are used in new LoY racial tailored robes. When I happen upon any of the 18 new research in this manner, I judge if it's worth the asking price. From any vendor it has always been worth the price. Pile up the research stuff, combine each one with a parchment and a quill, and produce many varied swatches for tailoring. The ones I can use as an erudite get set aside for my tailoring practice, and all others get dumped onto my bazaar mule, who sells them for 20 to 30 pp old part, or 200 and more for new part. Buy for 5, sell for 20. Buy for 10, sell for 30. It's easy money if your market supports it.

The crazy part is that others will list rune of astral in baz for 200 to 300 pp, but I list astral runed swatch for only 40 pp (my highest low end swatch). I dont really care what people are willing to pay; in quantity needed for tailor skill practice, people want to pay a little bit. Some sellers are learning that a new demand is out for these and increasing their prices accordingly. The reason I justify buying low and selling high is that not all dark elf/erudite/gnome/high elf/human/iksar tailors are also int casters with a research skill. I am providing the service of preparing materials to be ready for their use.

They sell fairly well, with hot streaks, for example where one high elf will buy all of my sorcery runed swatch, color skewn scribed swatch, and tear etched swatch for his use. An interesting trend to me is that my Iksar swatches just pike up and rot. I'm not making any more of those. It makes sense to me that if you play an Iksar, you appreciate the challenge of being reviled and hated everywhere, and don't care much for delicate arts such as tailoring. The iksar that I played would rather use skills to kill than to craft. It's in the mindset of a player who chooses to be iksar, I believe.

I have also made one spell using my skill, and it was trivial. I happened to get the pages to make Cripple from friends and groups, because I think those are more common than others. Cripple is by no means a rare spell but risk vs. reward. I dont think that raising the stakes by combining things worth 2 kpp each does anything but drive your losses. Besides, it's easy to look out for 18 to 36 items, not all of them. Collecting for more than a few spells would become a major investment and bank filler.

Side note, I do agree with what people have said of Illus: Vah Shir.. people still pay high prices for it, just for novelty's sake. Take advantage of the market you choose, while it lasts.

                    Re: crossover use of research

I see one vendor mule on my server who always seems to have copies of illusion: vah shir, everlasting breath, and levitation on sale for 25k each. When I made my copy of Illusion: Vah Shir, I priced it at 5k, which seemed kind of high to me considering how easy the spell was to get before research, and even easier now. Of course that trader bought it from me and priced it at 25k...

Guess I'm not very good at the market game. I just find it hard to believe that anyone would pay 25k for an eye candy spell.

Has anyone bought them from that trader yet, Farg? If not, then the answer is "You're right, no one WILL pay 25k for an eye candy spell"

I sold 2 of these for 25k in the first 3 weeks that LoY was out.

Now they sell for as low as 2k, and the pages sell for about 1k each.

Gotta move fast in a flash market.

                          heh

Levitation and Everlasting Breath are in high demand on my server. Yaeths pages 63 and 65 pieces are selling for upwards of 1000pp. I've managed to get my hands on a two copies of Everlasting Breath by buying components in bazaar for about 500pp or so and researched with no problems (180 skill and geerlok). Sold each copy for 5000pp...so bam 9000pp profit. However, that was before anyone paid much attention to which pages made which spells. I've been looking for more components for about a week and no luck.

                            Profit you say.

With a modified 189 research skill, I generally do not charge but let people offer. Most combines I do from an /ooc reply for spells, I receive 100 plat as a gift on average. Made a Misery swatch one night, same method, replied to an /ooc, was gifted 1000 plat.........10 minutes later the resulting robe was in the bazaar for 20k.

This game has come a long way since EC /auctions, used to get 5p per leather padding, guildmate now gets 35p on Torv.

Spells I make from my own research practice go to the guild bank or to my bazaar mule..you judge by this price I set: Dead Man Floating, 150p.
