I'm sure everyone knows that scent of marr can be bought from vendors. How about other research parts? I haven't played a caster since pre-kunark, but I do seem to recall that some parts were regularly stocked. And, when I was on SH, I did find a vendor that stocked runes of astral and frost -- pretty surprised to see that. I'll check in game to see if that's an SH-specific vendor change or if it's on all servers. I suspect it's specific; that zone was one of the legends-only changed ones.

There are a couple vendors in game that carry a few of the odd magician research parts.. scent of marr being one of them. There is a gypsie in EC at inn 3 (the one next to WC zoneline), and one in Qeynos caster guild that both carry the same selection.... i'm a bit unsure if there are others; never played a mage past level 8 ...
As for the rest of the sub-50's pieces, they're dropped. Finding a vendor with large stacks of certain ones wasn't real uncommon, many people would save all parts so they could work thier skill up, and once they hit trivial, they'd dump the rest onto merchants... although finding that someone had dumped a ton of the frost and astral runes in the "old days" would have been like stumbling into a gold mine.
As for what they've done on stormhammer.... from what i've seen, they've made a number of the less than pleasant tasks very easy.... always helps to have money, apperantly.
