So this skill looks like a total waste of plat.
However, anyone have a prefered method of skilling up? What tome did you make each level? Where did you farm the paper/parchment to make the tomes to skillup with? Some general idea of how many combines I'm looking at and how much plat to expect to burn would be appreciated.

You might try the link at Tradeskill Guide, specifically, the Spell Research section. It will not answer all your questions, but it will give you a start on what to make at what level. Not all the information posted is present in the guide, so you may have to read the comments after the guide to pick up more specific information.
As to where to farm the parchments, you will find the parchments on caster mobs at the level of the spell, so if you are looking for level 61 parchments, try level 58 to 64 caster mobs. I donated one hundred ten thousand plat to my pet Melee Researcher, but I also gave her a couple hundred level 61 parchments, as I found them fairly common.

I looked in the tradeskill guide and the tradeskills listed were int caster made only. I also looked in the melee guild thread listed and it only goes up to lvl 75 triv. With the first skill purchased from guildmaster I start off at 85, I'm trying to find some information to go up to 300 as this is the last skill I have left to skill up. Any new info on how to skill up for us hybrids?

Perhaps you did not make it to the bottom of the spell research section. All the below information was extracted from there, but is put into my words:
Getting started: I will assume you are already 50+ skill via trainer or starting quests. Then make the items on the list below. All components can be purchased at spell research vendors (PoK, Crescent Reach, Abysmal Sea, Corrathus Creep)
Alternative Routes: (Mostly for the Non-Pure Casters)
I recommend saving most of these as you may be able to use them later or simultaneously for cleaning spell parchments, vellums and papers
Trivial - Item name
102 - Oil of Vitrol
144 - Parchment Solution
174 - Fine Parchment solution
203 - Vellum Parchment solution
216 - Fine Vellum Parchment solution
243 - Runic Parchment Solution
Optional to 243:
Cleaning parchments/vellums are also 243, so you might consider doing some cleaning for skill-ups if farming parts is not a problem for you.
As a hybrid you can make any hybrid spell and/or any hybrid tome. You have your choice which to make:
Trivial - item to make
262 - Any spell that is 262 trivial
292 - Any spell that is 292 trivial
300 - Any spell that is >300 trivial
258 - Level 56 Tomes
298 - Level 61 Tomes
331 - Level 65 (or higher) Tomes
These three below have no restrictions other than some trips to burried sea to buy components, but it is expensive and will require a lot of time for farming / or buying the Sunshard (powder, pebbles, ore) in the bazaar unless you already have a large stash.
Trivial - item name
102 - Dull Energeiac Rod
239 - Shining Energeiac Rod
316 - Glowing Energeiac Rod
You should be able to look up tome and spell recipes easy enough here and/or Allakhazam's (or you can drop back in here if you have specific questions).
Hope this helps a bit

thx for the help, I got to 243 so far using your guide with the exceptoin that I chose to make fine runic parchments to 243 instead of the runic ones. It cost a little more but there were less sub combines and required less components to save on bag room so I paid for the extra ease basically. Now comes the fun parts eh
Edit: I looked up the Glowing Energeiac Rods and it's listed as caster only made.

Double check th recipe anyway, because I'm sure that input was made back when only INT casters (ENC, MAG, NEC, WIZ) could do any research combine.
I seem to recall some discussion on it somewhere when tomes were added (or maybe when priests were added), but I can't swear to the answer, but I'm fairly certain it is available to all. I'll try to remember to test it out.

I did go back and confirm that hybrids can not do the Energeiac Rod combines (you can do this combine in a container of this type). Sorry about the bad post on it earlier.
I will check the combines withe a priest and melee too at some point, but I suspect they will not.
I woner if that is just an oversight. With INT casters also being able to do the powder combines, one would think this should be allowed as an alternate priest/hybrid/melee route.
