Sothgar's Flame Rk II

Looking for general advice/strategy for trying to figure out the recipe for this lvl 75 wizard spell. I've never attempted a trial-and-error effort, any suggestions?

Well, start with the pieces that do not change.

It is a level 75 spell, so it uses Fine Runic Paper.

It is a Wizard spell, so it uses a Quill of the Arcanist

Beyond that, it likely uses Arcane Thickener, because it is a Single Target Direct Damage spell, it is a Fire spell, so Ro's Ink Additive is normal, and it is a damage spell, so it might use Ink of Pain.

Unfortunately, all those components put together make another level 75 Direct Damage Fire Wizard spell, so you have to get creative. Spells are altered by adding another Ink, adding a different type of Ink, or adding another component, usually Chronal Resonance Dust for 70 to 75 spells. Lower level spells would use Highland Sludge Drying Powder.

Essentially, start with the components that do not change and play with the ones that do. Try two or three Ink of Pain, if those do not work alone, try the Chronal Resonance Dust, perhaps play with other inks, since Sothgar's Flame does have a modification vs the target Fire resist (which would be Ink of Ro). Get creative, since it does not appear anyone has figured out the formula so far, so it must be something nobody has tried yet.

The formula was bugged for a time as well, so there may be things people have tried in the past without success that now work.

Sothgar's Flame

Just tried to make this spell with Ngreth's receipe. Came up with Etheral Conflageration RK II instead. Thought you all would like to know. Maybe add Chronal Resonance Dust?

the recipe I gave is the one in the DB...

which means... it needs to have the Chronal Resonance dusts added to it. Until then it will not work to get you the spell you want.

I will add it, but it will need a patch.
