  • Confused on Research

So I have scoured the pages and pages of forum posts and asked in game, but I am still a little confused on spell research. Don't get me wrong I understand how the combines work and all that, but I was looking at the Quick trivial list and noticed how some spells are trivial at 400. My question here is how does one get there skill up that high and what level must you be? I thought the cap was 300, but what items or AA's does it take to achieve this? I have a magician and would like to know especially since normal math would tell me that with Ethereal Quill (which has a +15% research ability) that would only raise you to 345 (assuming you have your skill at 300). Anyway I am just dieing to know as I am lost and would like to make high level spells. If you can also show me a break down that makes sense would be very appreciative. Thanks so much.

Any help is appreciated from the pros out there.

AA's are the secret. The Alternate Ability affecting Research is called Arcane Tongues, under Archetype. There are three levels of this. The other important AA is Salvage, under General. This one affects all tradeskills so is a bargain.

To see how the tradeskill specific AA's affect your chance of success, look at this Calculator found on the home page here.

The cap is still 300 + the trophy or other skill mod. So you cannot get a skill of 400, but you can still make any item with a trivial above 300. The point is that it will be difficult. Getting 300 skill, max trophy and the AAs will reduce the failures, or the pain of failure in the case of salvage. This is true for all tradeskills, they all have recipes that are above the max attainable skill level.
