  • Getting the skill to 300, a question

I'm what I call a "renewbie", I used to play EQ a looong time ago. How long? When I was last playing, the cap was 250, the game went to Omens of War, and the loot tables were a *lot* simpler.

In any event, I figure some of the information found may be a little out of date, so I didn't want to take certain things on faith.

Is Spell Research considered a "general" tradeskill now? That is, can I take it to 300 and also a general tradeskill like tailoring or baking, and not have to spend AA to do it?

If Spell Research *has* been "promoted", what are the new general tradeskills, so I don't have to ask this kind of thing again?

    Thanks!

Pure casters (mag, wiz, nec, enc) can get their skill to 300. Pure melee (rog, war, ber, mnk) can also get their skill to 300 (but it's a lot harder). Those classes do not have to spend AAs to do research. Priests and Hybrids I believe have to spend AAs in order to do research and can get their skill up to 200 max [I believe - this part is recalled from what I think I heard way back when - you'll want to confirm this yourself].

It's probably worth it to put a single practice point (you get 5 ever time you ding) into research with your guildmaster as that will set your research skill to your current level (provided you haven't already gotten any research skill points on your own).

Pure casters have a much easier time getting their skillup as they are able to use the binding powders to skill up. Pure melees have more challenges. Only pure melees are able to make tomes, and they are not able to make casters spells. They do not have access to the Mastery AAs like the pure casters do. But they can get the research trophy that can eventually get them an additional 15% skill. All that's known so far that's available for melees to get skillups after 243 (highest level cleaning solution) is making tomes.

While it is available to everyone, since there are restrictions for hybrids, I will not personally consider it one of the general tradeskills.

Research is not considered a general tradeskill. As such, you do not have to spend AAs to advance the skill to 300.

      Non-general tradeskills:
      Alchemy
      Poison-making
      Research
      Tinkering

The seven general tradeskills remain the same:
      Baking
      Brewing
      Fletching
      Jewelry Crafting
      Pottery
      Smithing
      Tailoring

Thanks! I'd hate to raise my research to 201 or higher, only to find out that's all I can do.

I remember doing something like that with one of the other trades, was forced to spend tradeskilling AA's
