I have been away from EQ for about 4 years and I come back and almost everything has changed. My friends and I have started a new group of toons and I was going to pick up spell research but it is different than I remember. I have read over the guides listed and it is greek to me. Since I only have a skill of 21 how would you all suggest I proceed? I did the practice runes on my other caster (I have gotten older and money is tighter, I'm not activating that account 1 account is my limit) so I know about that way. I was wondering if there is a more efficient way to do it now (I hated camping the parts)? I only have about 4k plat as well so ANY suggestions would be helpful.

The list in the last one closely resembles the guide, which you said you read, so I won't link the tradeskill guide.
I would suggest starting with the Crescent Reach research task, which will get you to 54. From there I would recommend you look at the tradeskill guide list again and see if you can make sense of it.
However, with your desire to not have to camp parts and not spend much plat, I would recommend taking up another trade skill if you want to make significant progress (you can easily get to over 250 skill in brewing for under 4K plat and no farming).
The only way to advance to the high end of research is through doing combines which require farming and plat.

Thank you so much for the reply. Well I guess I can farm, I cant find anyone on my server at the bazaar that are selling spells. I hate not having all my spells.
I have read what you posted and I have just one question. I remember doing the training runes from before but I cant remember exactly. I make an Azia and Beza rune and then combine them both to get a complete rune?

Mostly...
The old research components still drop if they have a recipe use other than making spells (swatches and robes). Otherwise the drop slot was replaced by a vendor fodder rune with no use besides selling to vendors to keep the pp farm rate of NPCs that used to drop the components consistent.Roanne LeFaye

Thank you guys so very, very much
But I have one more question (this is the last one I promise!). I'm a little slow and my search-fu is rusty I guess.
If the old components no longer drop is there a list of the new recipes somewhere for what each spell needs? (I'm sorry if this is posted somewhere else but I have looked everywhere). So I would think that one component is dropped and the rest are store bought?
Thank you all so much again!

http://www.eqtraders.com/articles/ar...r=080105000000
is the link to the spell recipe section of this site. I use the quick trivial list a lot if I cant go the skilling path recommended on the guide in the other section of the forums.
To get to that link yourself, go to the homepage for eqtraders and click on the recipes button on the menu bar on the left side of the page, then click on spell research.
If you are wanting to look up what a particular spell needs in order to make it, simplest way to get your answer is enter the name of the spell in the search window also on the eqtraders home page. If the spell comes up as a result of the search you can select the name and you will be shown the recipe to make it, if it doesnt show up, you might go to allahs and see if its sold or quested rather than researched. If you really are lower level (under 50ish) a lot of your spells are much more easily bought in PoK or Abysmal Sea than researched since the hides can be a pain to farm and you will find yourself xp'd past the spells useful level fairly quickly that route (personal recent experience making 2 caster toons on a server I didnt have any plat on).
Generally the method is a paper of some type is dropped off a mob in the form of a hide (up to level 50 spells), spell scroll (level 50-55 spells), papyrus ( 56-60), Parchment (61-66) Vellum (67-70) or paper (71-75). What level spell they make is noted in the info on the item when you inspect it and when initially looted it will be in some form of distress (grubby, shabby, stained, dirty, sooty, smudged etc). You then need to prepare that paper by some means (cleansers can be made with a combo of dropped and/or purchased parts or straight out purchased the process is slightly different for hides but close). You then take that paper and combine it with a quill ( also made or purchased), a thickener ( made or purchased), and one or more inks (yeah, you guessed it, made or purchased). You save the most money imo by making your own cleansers if you can stand the repetition and you have access to lots of saltpeter and crystalized sulfur (and a smattering of gems and ores that can be farmed or bought).
Now that Im done with the skilling up process Research is probably one of my more favored crafts (as well as lucrative) but getting 300 wasnt much fun and I dread doing it again so I can make tomes.
Keep in mind too any of the old word/page/rune drops that dont make swatches still make celestial essence.Last edited by Grizabelle; 05-20-2009, 02:19 PM.

oh, and
I forgot to mention, if you are just looking to skill up to make the level 60ish spells too for those toons you mentioned there are also skillups using the various binding powders. If you want to look into that there is more info down in the guide area. Basically you take a regular parchment ( bought), a binding powder of the appropriate level ( farmed), a solution appropriate for the powder ( bought) and add a spell caster essence ( summoned by a caster, they are tradeable but temporary). The result is a scroll that can be "used" to "cast" a spell or just sold. Not much of a secondary market for them on my server but you can sell them back to vendors. Downside if you are short on funds is that you have to buy the solutions afaik, you cant save plat making them and if you are summoning your own essences you are stuck at level barriers.
It seemed to me that the powders dropped a lot more frequently than hides below level 50 (no idea if thats true or just my experience when leveling recently and trying to get spells for 3 casters).

Here's a useful list of the hides, etc and the level spells they make Hides, etc list. You probably have seen some of the hides dropping, such as raw hide and raw fine hide at the low 20s level, these are what are used for the new research. The higher level parchments seem to be rarer. Hides, parchments, etc and binding powders only drop off of spell casters of the appropriate level. So if you haven't been killing any casters you may not have seen any.
You can get to 243 skill making solutions - no farming, all vendor bought supplies, but that gets pretty expensive.Last edited by Altara; 05-21-2009, 10:28 AM.

Thank you guys so very much. I'm not sure what I'm going to do. I hate not having all my spells and there isnt anyone selling many spells on my server.
I would prefer to save my money and just buy them. I guess I will have to farm.
Thank you all again for all the information.

you dont really need to farm that much if you take not of the hides/spell parchment etc that drop in the zones you're fighting in you can collect a fair ammount as you go. Also make careful note on collecting binding powders as these are the cheapest form of skillups. Also once you can go see the quest giver in freeport (near the book) and do the tradeskill trophy quest (yeah its a quest now, no more making grandmaster then trying to make it).Grand Master Artisan aka nolife
