  • Beating a dead horse, sorry

Ok, I am going to need to start research on my warrior in order to make tombs and I just have a few questions. Some of the answeres to these questions may have changed since some of the threads are older so I am asking again, sorry.

    1) By doing this on my warrior-not a hybrid-I will be able to make ALL tombs that are currently researchable and I will not have to spend AAs in order to get to 300, right?

    2) I was planning on doing the research quests in CR to start out with some free skill ups, does this still work? Or will I be able to do the AS freebees as well or where those even ever able to be done with the new tombs kits?

    3) When it comes to the trophy from the Freeport area with the mobifier on it should I go for it right away or put a few point on research first? I have seen conflicting reports from cant get after 100 to have to be between 50 99 to get so just curious.

    4) I am correct in that in order to do a single combine I need to first see my guildmaster and train some points in the skill first?

    5) After doing some searching it looks like I am very limited to the way that I can actually achieve skill ups as a warrior. Some of the stuff I have read about the way that they get to 243 would cost a FOURTUNE, well at least to me a EQ fortune. I have limited funds so after the freebee quest, if I can even do those, is there and option besides solutions/researchers clay that anyone has found?

    6) I have a Enchanter researcher that is close to 300 so I have a small supply of raw(just how they dropped) parchents and the like so for the ones that I can no longer use for skill ups can I use those to make tombs?

    7) Can I research tombs that can be vendor bought or only mob drop ones?

    8) Can I research tombs that are from turn ins or only mob drop ones?

    9) If I need to make tombs that have a trivial close to 350 or higher what lvl must I get to in order to even have a chance of actually making one? I know it depends on the RNG and modifiers and what not but I know on my chanter I have made 350 trivial spells below 250 skill, same for tombs?

    10) Is this going to drive me crazy because I am poor and it will take forever to farm components as a lvl 63 warrior?

Thank you all and I am so glad this resource is here.

I am on the Bristlebane server if anyone has donations that will help with this, hehe, jk on the donations part, sort of. ****, already crazy it seems and have not even started yet.

    Melee Research Answers

    1) All tomes researchable, No AAs needed to reach 300 for a melee (warrior)

    2) Research Quest in Crescent Reach is doable; will get you to 54. There is no research quest in Abysmal Sea. Your guildleader will give you a research skill equal to your level.

    3) Get the Freeport trophy as soon as you finish the CR quests. The trophy is more difficult the higher your research gets.

    4) You must first see your guildmaster and train a point in the skill first.

    5) Skill up options are solutions, researcher's clay, and tomes. This is not a cheap skill.

    6) the parchments used for spells are usable for tomes, with one added tome ingredient (I forget which).

7-8) There is a list somewhere of all the researchable tomes,. Basically, if you can buy it, it isn't researchable. Here's my copy of the list.

WAR65 Tome of Bellow of the Mastruq
    ROG65 Tome of Kyv Strike
    MNK65 Tome of Phantom Shadow

    BST69 Skill: Empathic Fury

    9) melees are as good as finger-wagglers in success rate, That is, if your chanter felt i\he was good enough for a particular trivial, your melee should be as well. Hybrids, Priests and Bards aren't as good.

    10) Is this going to drive me crazy because I am poor and it will take forever to farm components as a lvl 63 warrior? Only if you make it your primary goal. Put the drops in the bank and skill up as you can. My necro is at 300(345), chanter 300(336), wizzie 299, druid 266, warrior 251, mage 247, SK 216, and bard 174 ... They'll all get there eventually, but not tomorrow.

      2) Research Quest in Crescent Reach is doable; will get you to 54. There is no research quest in Abysmal Sea. Your guildleader will give you a research skill equal to your level.
Your guildleader will only grant you a research skill equal to your level IF you created your character before the spell research changes went into effect AND if you currently have a research skill of (zero).

      4) You must first see your guildmaster and train a point in the skill first.
You only need to visit your guildmaster for a training point if you created your character before the spell research changes went into effect. As stated above, if you are in this category your guildmaster will grant you a research skill equal to your level. If you created your character after the spell research changes went into effect, your character automatically gains the spell research skill at the appropriate character level.

So far it has cost me around 400k to get my monk to 265 research skill. The vast majority of this was spent on making solutions for skill ups. I just got my necromancer to 282 research skill for less than 150k, with almost 100k going into vendor purchased parchment solutions for the last 20 points.

I find this kind of disparity in cost rather unfair. I have heard the arguments and the only ones that make any sense are saying that from a "Roleplay" perspective INT casters would have a better background for research and only they have the ability to "focus" their magic in a way that helps with research. But ask yourself this: in our real history, who was it that was always responsible for scribing and transcribing and researching before the advent of the printing press? Answer: MONKS!!! Think about it.

Ok and thanks for the helpful input. I should get 63 points in research just from talking to my guildmaster from what is said here so no CR skill ups I guess. 400K, dear lord, I have not spent that much on smithing, tailoring, brewing, jewlcraft combined on all my toons, but I have been working on TS for YEARS so I guess slow and steady it is.

If any of you are friends with Ngreth (sorry probable spelled that wrong) the master TS EQ designer please beg him for me to be able to have another path for skll ups. Thanks for the list of tombs as well, time to farm papers I guess.

If you are patient, you can make solutions you will use and sell the spells. In the end you will actually make money. It is not a fast process. You can use the made solutions on your caster researcher also.

Silvermink makes a good point. I was impatient and leveled my monk's research in about 3 days. I would make about 100 solutions and then sell them back to the vendor. I think it got around 1/3 to 1/2 of my investment back on resale to the vendor, maybe a little more, but definitely a losing deal.

Another notable point is that at this time there is only one other Expert+ level melee researcher selling tomes in the bazaar on my server. In 2 weeks since hitting 250 skill I have sold enough Tomes to nearly recoup all of the 400k spent on leveling research. I would imagine that other servers probably have a similar demand at this time.

              My server certainly does.

Everything I make I can sell easily enough, although I am lazy at present and not making a great deal.

I found it easy enough to get to 297 skill just doing Research for people who asked for somebody to make their tomes (and spells when spell Research was still new and shiny).

I finished the last three points of spell Research and my trophy on Binding Powders, but I would have gotten there eventually just doing spells, and I see no reason I will not get to 300 and a finished trophy doing melee Research in the same way.

I am really in no hurry.
