Getting started with hybrid research

I tried to start hybrid research on my ranger. I am already very familiar with spell research as my main is a wizard. Unfortunately, I have been unable to find any guides to making tomes for melee types. Since hybrids should be able to make hybrid spells as well, I decided to try some low trivial spell subcombines.
Some inks and vial of pure water are listed here on eqtraders as being combinable in hybrid research containers but didn't seem to work for me.
I took the ingredients for a vial of pure water. When I right click on my hybrid research kit it opens to the small slots for the container itself (like clicking the experiment option in a spell research kit). There is no window showing my trivial or a search option.
When I single stack all of the items for a vial of pure water my combine button remains greyed out. Is this a bug? Has anyone else done hybrid research and can tell me if there is something else I need to do or a guide that explains how melee research is different?

My Shadow Knight is now at 189. He did the Crescent Reach Quests to 54. Oil of Vitrol to 102 and Solutions thereafter. He makes his own Vials of Pure Water in the Hybrid Research Kit.

I bought a Hybrid research kit with my brother's ranger. It opens just like a regular container. All of the other research kits react the same. My best guess is that Rangers did not get properly linked to the Hybrid Research Kit. You may be the first ranger to try very hard to research. Submit an in-game bug report.
