    EQ Traders request)
    Would it be possible to have someone who knows research create an updated guide on how you research now? I looked at the eqtraders link for learning -> research and all the links are old school i think. I went to the message board for tradeskill guide (v5 even!), and it still lists the practice runes and swatches with LoY expansion and it didnt look like any new methods (maybe there is no new worthy skill up method?). After scanning the research thread, i still dont know whats going on with research - unless i spend a fortune to buy parts, or buy subparts in the baz (or farm forever for some drops i dont get, or maybe hunt level 10 zones for the drops? not sure where the subcombine parts drop, except it can be anywhere) Anyway, not looking to make Spell X, but just how do you skill up? I have several of the following:
    * Papyrus
    * Paper
    * Vellum
    * Runic * (?)
    * Parchment
    * Hide
    * Powder
    Is the new research still so new that not all combines are known, or is it just that it takes to much time to create a new research guide?

    Misc: I read that "* Paper" drops are not used yet, eqtraders doesnt list a use for Ornate Powder, but alla's does. Should i just sell it for now? Maybe a big picture highlight would help to start with. I saw that all "* parchment" drops are for level 61-65 spells - is that true, or do parchments now make other levels also? I guess there is kind of a cross matrix of skill path vs created items with drops. I have no idea really, please tell me :-), we have all this research stuff in the bank, and we either need to figure this out, or just unload it and free up space for what can be usable. (even all the uncut gems can be used for jewelry skill ups, but the hides, powders, paper's - what for? I did a look up in the eqtraders and found hits on some of the above list, and it looks like it takes about 300plat a try to skill up, that cant be right (unless you do the subcombines mentioned - but that costs just as much if not more in the end). The comment about taking bank space for research scares me, as there is not room for extra stuff (with so many no trade, required parts, and bag for this, bag for that, its scary) Maybe this is to noob of a question? I have made the 2100 club, and have made it to 200 research a while ago :-), so am not new to tradeskills, but with 3 or 4 paths for research i am unclear on what is what with research now. the clearest i got was it just takes one drop to do research now, so what would be a guide for the one drop path, and more importantly – what drop is it, at what tradeskill level?

    EQ request)
    Something that would greatly help researchers out, is to make all players aware of why they need researchers, i.e. allow players to know what spells they are missing. I am playing many chars, and i have no idea if i got all the spells for each char. Is there anyway in game to see a list of spells i have? (like an open window - skill box style? - the spell book has all the spells and has the pretty icons, but that doesnt help.) The right click lists per type of spell and that is what i use, very handy. But i still dont know what i am missing. Allowing players to know something exists, allows them the option of new gameplay, i need spell X, or i want to get every spell for my char that i can. Ya know, whatever silly quest we come up with :-), but with no ability to start this, you dont do it. Look to the Skills Window to see what i mean. Its nice to see, oh a skill exists! and look, i can work on it to take it higher! amazing. So spell wise it would be, oh look a spell exists for this class at level 6 that i never knew about, amazing. I gotta work on this.

    addon: as an example of why i ask, go to the new research vendor's in POK, and pick an item to look up in eqtraders. First one i did, no hit on eqtraders. Second one, its exists, but isnt used in any tradeskill. I am not adverse to figuring things out, but for research? As far as i can see, it is only for completeness of a character and a way to loose money :-).

    It will happen when a user decides to write one up and submit it. EQTraders is 100% volunteer-run. There is no staff person(s) responsible for creating and updating guides.

    I love your ideas and I too would love a comprehensive guide to current Spell Research because I just got into it. So like you, I'm still kind of in the dark.

    While there are other things it's used for, Research is primarily a way to acquire older spells that used to be available only as drops off of mobs. As of this writing, only spells through Omens of War are researchable.

      Read through this thread to get the basic concept of new research:
      http://www.eqtraders.com/articles/ar...r=080105000000

      Then this thread for how it is transplanted to the lower lvl spells:
      http://mboards.eqtraders.com/eq/showthread.php?t=27282

      I know it's quite a bit of reading compared to the TS guides, but once you've absorbed it all, you'll be able to journey on your own with only your logic to guide you. The learning curve is deep. But once you understand it, you'll find it deeply satisfying.

        For straight skilling up I would use the various binding powders. Its much cheaper than the solutions for the hides, etc. See this thread Spellcaster's essences and uses. There is an ingame book called Enchanted Scrolls from spell research vendor in PoK that gives a general outline.

        First, you make the appropriate level spell (either single or mass version) then scribe it. Then cast and combine the essence created (the mass versions create 5 at a time) with the appropriate binding powder (dropped) and binding solution (storebought). Save the parchments (they stack to 50). After that trivials, you can make the scrolls from the parchments. Then move on to next level of essence/binding powder.

        At 200 skill you would start with the spellcaster's essence/binding powder, its not listed in the original post because it was broken for awhile but post 14 has it.

          for a list of spells you have on your character, I believe the command is /outputfile spellbook. THis will result in a TXT file in your EQ directory, which you can read with Notebook or Word.

          EQPlayers has a "what spells am I missing" function, but you have to pay, it's not part of teh "lite" free functionality. And there are some spells still listed in their database which never existed, hehe.

          I'm hoping to put together a Spell Research guide soon, in PDF format perhaps...when/if I do, I'll make it available here on EQTC.

            I finally registered here (after 5 years) to encourage you to do this. Here is why:

            I like the new research system, its logical and makes having the skill useful (i.e., making other class spells helps your friends out). Its fantastic if you have high skill.

            But... as a player that returned to a new server 8 months ago and played melee until about 2 weeks before SoF was launched (then I decided to be a necro) here is the problem I have encountered --I can't skill up in a reasonable manner. I'm not talking 300 skill either...

            I will share my experience as maybe I am missing something obvious.

            I used up 8 months worth of world drops (I had saved them all levelling 4 characters to 51-56 mostly in TSS zones) and managed to get to 90ish skill. I made some expensive aqua regia type combines to break 100. In the meantime I am level 60 now and rarely seeing the needed component drops to skill up.

            Baz prices are crazy for hides, etc. If I want to skill up smithing I can farm a lot of velium... research hides are seldom under 200-400p let alone the higher level items.

            I have read the stickys and the posts showing the chart of vendor bought combines you can do. 200 plat for a 102 trivial attempt is not reasonable... we are talking level 30s spells for what that trivial equates to! I liked the idea that a young int caster could choose to research their own level 24 pet with a bit of effort, this doesn't seem realistic at the moment to me.

            So either I am missing something (likely) and a guide would be a godsend... or the new research system is great for those that skilled up before it was implemented.

            I could even accept the latter if they had added the spells to appropriate levelled named in TSS (so the level 20s spells drop in blightfire, 40s in Mesa) --but I recognize that is beyond of EQtraders to assist with.

              Go to the main part of the site and search "binding powder". You'll find a dozen new items, click on the various "find recipes that use this item" links.

                It would help if the binding powders were dropped a bit more frequently. Bazaar prices for the powders are starting to approach the costs of doing the cleaning solutions.

                  On Quellious some folks have Rune powder up for 30K

                    No thanks, they drop plenty enough. The problem is that you have so many people buying them to get the easy route to 300 that supply in the baz isnt building up. Wait a few weeks when those people reach 300 and youll have your fill.
