Are old runes/pages/words useless now?

I have a ton of these old research components lying around and was told that even the old research was revamped and they are not used. Is this true?

yes, they are useless for research. they may be viable for celestial essence.

. . . and in some specialized quests that call for them, like the Wizard pre-quest for the Epic 1.5, which has a part requiring 10 runes (some special drops and one from another part of the overall quest) to be combined to create a spell used to help a NPC get a machine started (though the NPC and the machine have been moved - were in Steamfont right in front of the Mino caves . . . not sure where they are now).
