  • Very confused researcher

Hi all! I'm hoping to get some help in researching. Some quick info about me:

Silentwolfe, 70th magician of Fennin Ro
    Current research skill: 78

*cough* Ok, so my skill is LOW. I started research a while back and hated it, but now it seems I'm having a world of trouble getting different 61-70 spells. SO, time for research.

Now that we are post-SoF... where do I even begin to work on getting my skills up?

      wow

Wow... it looks like I've got my work cut out for me then. Every research recipe seems to be full of sub combines

Thanks for that link... I guess I'll have to start working my way up a bit at a time.

It is not as bad as it looks:

Every combine uses a quill. The quill is a (30 to 40 trivial) combine, vendor items, a couple gold each.

Every combine uses ink(s). Ink requires requires a subcombine to make Vial of Pure Water, then 1 to 3 powders (vendor bought) to mixin in it to make the ink. All parts are cheap. All trivial levels are low.

I make Vial of Pure Water in batches of 100 at a time (5 stacks of epmty vials, 4 stacks of water, partial stack (20 of 25) Gnomish Heat Sources. Don't worry about having extra you will need it.

Every combine uses a thickener. All parts are store bought, these are low trivial levels, the parts are more expensive (10 to 40pp for some items), but yield is 30 or 40 (depending on thickener).

There is really only one hard part. The scrolls/parchments/vellums which need to be farmed and cleaned (and yes lots of subcombines).

(alternate components) Sometimes there are alternate components. These are typically dropped items and may or may not be easy to get and make (necro pets typically require pone chips, some GoD spells require Sample of Highland Sludge and then more sub combines)

My recmomendation is to start collecting (farming, buying, whatever) saltpeter and crystallized sulfer and start on the sub-sub combines for the spell/parchment/vellum solutions. The solutions trivial up to 243 (and can get expensive) but you will need them later. You should read the Tradeskill guide here: http://mboards.eqtraders.com/eq/showthread.php?t=30177 to get some ideas.

Also, depending on how you feel about time vs plat, you can avoid a lot of the subcombines for the cleaning solutions by buying Aqua Regia and Vial of Muriatic Acid from the research vendors. The high level solutions tend to require one of each, which will set you back about 230pp, or you can farm 4x saltpeter and 3x crystallized sulfur and some storebought stuff and do a bunch of subcombines.

These days I tend to follow a middle route, buying 3x Oil of Vitrol from the merchant for 163pp and throwing in 1x saltpeter and some cheap storebought bits to make the AR and VoMA.

After skill 243 it gets tougher; you mostly have to make real spells (level 62 or higher) and sell them to players to recoup the costs, but the spells do sell and I've found the skillups seem to come pretty fast compared to other tradeskills. My wizard's made it up to 291 that way (one more and level 63 spells will join the trivial list) and continues to plug away at it. Good luck!

Don't overlook combines like the LoY swatches (the robes made with the swatches are restricted by race but any researcher can make the swatches themselves, and they are easy combines, if you can get the drops...)

... and the Researcher Clay (good for skilling up after the cleaning solutions become trivial at 243, up to 262)

Research is easily the most complicated of the tradeskills. I had to write an entire spreadsheet dedicated just to it to keep track of everything when all the other tradeskills fit neatly in a combined spreadsheet. It follows a predictable pattern, however, so once you learn it, it makes sense.

Thanks everyone for all the good info. I think I may start getting my research together this weekend. Time to clear some bank space hehe.
