  • Research Spreadsheet Redux

I found Xorillian L'Amante's spreadsheet below a few weeks ago,and decided I wanted to add things to it. I've spent the past two weeks plugging away at this thing; I hope it finds some use.

    Blank Research-2

It was a little big, so I had to throw it up on my Geocities hosting.'

The stuff I added in a nutshell:

    * - Lower level research added

    * - DoDh research added (only as a reference prepared by
Harmonie and subsequently updated by Illana ... my macros don't work on this stuff yet.)

    * - A column added to the Makeable sheet that tells you what combines are trivial for your skill level - green for trivial, blue for non-trivial.

    * - 2 macros. 1 takes an /outputfile from EQ and turns it into a sheet in the workbook [ctrl-i], the 2nd takes that information and uses it to auto-populate the amounts on the Components sheet.

I'm sure I messed stuff up, etc. etc. If you find a problem, let me know, and I'll fix it. I'd like to thank both of the two before me that gave me the inspiration to mess with this thing.

-EDIT- And now I notice the new post on X's post.... seems someone beat me to it by a week. GAH!

I have absolutely no problem with people making and posting spreadsheets, but it makes me wonder if the database is serving researchers very well. Is there something we could do to the display of info from the database to make it more useful?

If I am not mistaken, these spreadsheets read a /dump of your inventory, bank, etc and organize what you have and tells you what you can make with waht you have, which might be a bit much to ask of the EQTC database, hehe

But I'm sure forlks can suggest improvements...

Right, the big reason I made the spreadsheet was so I could take the inventory of my page mule and determine out of that jumble of identical looking crap what I was able to make.

It did take me a bit of work to get the stuff from EQTC to a spreadsheet, since the look here changed. I ended up creating a macro to take out all the extra cdata since Excel likes to take the pasted data and put it all into an odd number of cells.

That said, I absolutely adore the stuff I find here. I know I come here every time I get into my tradeskill stuff, trying to figure out what I can make with what I have on hand. I just got tired of sifting through pages

-EDIT- Ok, I didin't explain that very well. In regard to the cut/paste thing with excel, whereas in the past, every piece of information would go into its own cell; with the current site formatting, a bunch of information all gets bundled together. (Most specifically, I've found that the trivial creates itself a merged cell, which makes it hard to manipulate.) Not a big deal really.... just a little tricksy thing.

Research is vastly different from most tradeskills, Verdandi.

First of all, there are more components.

When I look at my stock for, say, Smithing, and want to pull all the useful stuff I can find for a smithing run, I can basically look down the list and know what to pull. I pull any Tae Ew Blood, check for temper components that can be made into completed tempers, maybe pull out my cultural stock.

When it comes to research...I have one mule dedicated solely to LoY research, and another mule dedicated to DoD research. The DoD only takes up about 10 bags, while the LoY research takes up about 18 bags (all 10-slot).

More importantly, trivial progression is non-linear.

When dealing with Tailoring, for example, there are specific skill ranges that you will farm spider silk for, and rockhoppers, and cobalt wyverns, and othmir, etc. You'll only be looking at those components for those specific ranges of skill. However, when it comes to Research, you can't do this. Instead of one or two primary components, you have to look at ALL LoY research as a whole. As you reach certain trivial 'tiers' in research, you'll find that you can't just skip over the components for recipes at that tier -- many, probably most, will be used in recipes at a higher trivial.

I place a "trivial index" beside each component on my spreadsheet. This number represents the highest trivial of any recipe used by that component. If the highest trivial is class-specific, I place it in parentheses. For example, Rune of Incitation has a trivial index of 216 (227), meaning that it can make spells for any researcher up to trivial 216, but can make spells for wizards up to trivial 227. Probably close to half of the components have a trivial index of 227 or (227).

Okie dokie, no problem at all. It doesn't sound like anything we could accomplish in the database without far more work than people are already putting into the spreadsheets. I just wanted to be sure we aren't short-changing our researchers!
