  • Rough Draft guide

Decided to make a non-class oriented guide just to see what kind of progression there was for generic recipes. Post comments/corrections if you would like.

    Non-specific class researching guide

First off, go buy one of these to keep equipped. Later you can do one of the new trophies ( http://mboards.eqtraders.com/eq/showthread.php?t=25383 )

    Geerlok Automated Quill
    Slot: PRIMARY
    Skill Mod: Research +5%
    WT: 4.0 Size: TINY
    Class: NEC WIZ MAG ENC
    Race: ALL
    Slot 1, Type 7

Trivial 15 - Fine Salt (easiest recipe ever!)

Trivial 35 – Quill of the Prophet (or any other class quill), all vendor bought components.

Trivial 54 - Vial of Pure Water – all vendor bought components. Save all the ones you make for later.

Trivial 62 - “Training rune”, this requires some low level collection work of wasp wing, zombie skin, spiderling silk and a piece of raw-hide armor for each attempt. See Practice Research section for more details on how to do this.

    http://www.eqtraders.com/recipes/rec...r=080105000000

Trivial 95 - “Journeyman Rune”, this requires low level collection work of bat fur, pixie wing, burned out lightstone (no-drop item from wisps), and a piece of raw-hide armor for each attempt. See Practice Research section for more details.

Trivial 102 – Oil of Vitrol. This requires farming/buying crystallized sulfur and saltpeter. Save all of the ones you make for later.

    Trivial 112- LoY Swatches.

    http://www.eqtraders.com/recipes/rec...r=080105120000

color skewn swatch, inverse runed swatch, obligation scried swatch, scent etched swatch, breath etched swatch, burnish scried swatch

At this point, you can either do more LoY swatches (132-152 trivial), and the priest class spells (176-227), or jump into the DoD items below.

    Priest Class spells - http://www.eqtraders.com/recipes/rec...r=080105100000

    DoD combines- http://www.eqtraders.com/recipes/rec...r=080105160000

And of course, save all the solutions so you can make spells out of them later.

    Trivial 144 - Parchment Solutions / Parchments
Trivial 174 - Fine Parchment solutions / Fine Parchments
Trivial 203 - Vellum Parchment solutions / Vellum Parchments
Trivial 216 – Fine Vellum Parchment solutions / Fine Vellum Parchments
Trivial 243 – Runic Parchment Solutions / Runic Parchments

I remember there was a previous thread that reminded us the LoY research kit cannot be gotten until you reach an adjusted skill of 101. So that would mean LoY swatches cannot be started until a raw skill of 97.

Ah, I never did LoY swatches. Figures something would go wrong there.

Many thanks, Zacatac. This is nice to have all in one area!

As a further suggestion, since most caster's (maybe all of them, I'm not sure) can't learn research till lv 16, they'll have at least a skill of 16 once they train the first point.

Also, I believe Abysmal Sea has a quest to get your little researcher to 54 for no cost other then the time involved.

You no longer have to train new skills when they open up, now when you ding 16 you automatically get research at skill 1. And there is no abysmal refine for researchers.

Hmmm, can tell I'm an old dawg at Researching. Thanks for the info about how Research is handled now.

Does Alchemy follow those examples as well? The Abysma Sea and automatic skill point when you reach the correct level?

The automatic skill point is true for all skills tied to a starting level (except tinkering that still starts at 50). I am pretty sure that research is the only tradeskill not to have an Abysmal sea quest though.

Yeah at 96/97 get a geerlock and go LoY stuffs FTW. There are some that take components that people sell in the baz for 1-5pp each. Trying to remember them now lol. eye of serilis (sp), linchenclover sometimes, wing of xegony, ....couple others. Anyway, can get to 132 range on the ~cheap. After that the items, at least I found in the baz, become more rare and more expensive so didn't continue.

Want to say I did 1-20 at the guild hall, 21-54 pure water, 55-96 oil of vitrol using the pure waters I had made, 97 - 132 LoY. Been a while though so all that might be wrong .

I'm leveling up a necro and I just got to skill level 102 in less than 30 minutes. I want to be able to research my own spells (up to 60) as well as provide some pricing competition on necro spells in the bazaar.

                    Required from farming or bazaar:
                    6 stacks Saltpeter
                    6 stacks Crystalized Sulfur

                    1) Fine Salt to 15 - bought one stack of rock salt, hit 15 with a couple left over.

                    2) Vial of Pure Water to 54 - Kept buying empty vials, water and gnomish heat sources until I hit 54. Need 6 stacks of Vial of Pure Water for next step.

                    3) Oil of Vitrol to 102 - I had 9 Saltpeter and Crystalized Sulfur left over when I hit 102. Your mileage may vary.

Next step is parchment solutions to 144.

For your guide, be sure to suggest making whatever parchments the person has available... the parchment preparation trivials where the solution does so that's a few more combines with stuff stockpiled. And somewhere in those last few steps should be burning any regular Parchments by making spells as those trivial in the 230 ish range... 231?

                        trophies

Just one small quibble, you mention buying the geerlok and doing the trophy later - although this was true right when the trophies came out, the way things stand now the earlier ones are far easier to complete than the later ones. I'd suggest doing the beginner trophy at around 65-70 skill - high enough that your chance of failing the combines is small.

I've had no problems whatsoever with trophies evolving in the ammo slot, so I usually leave it there and keep the stats on the other slots. For a beginner, I'm honestly not sure what would happen if you equipped a geerlok in primary and had your trophy in ammo - I know the mods don't stack and you would only get the greater of the two mods, but I'm not 100% sure if the trophy would evolve if IT wasn't the item providing the active mod. On my main, all trophies started at better than the geerloks... and on my alts I haven't been bothering to buy geerloks, just doing the new trophies.

A geerlock is 5% mod, period. A new trophy won't have better than 5% mod until you get to 250+ skill. The mods do NOT stack, therefore there isn't much reason to get the new trophy early except that the quest might be easier. It doesn't help you at all compared to geerlock mod at the early levels.

And I never really said when "later" was exactly, it's just not at skill 1. I'll leave a link to the FAQ and let them decide.

The trophy will advance if you hold it in the ammo slot and have a geerlok in primary... at least it did for me when I was working on my journeyman pottery trophy.

You definitely want to do the beginner trophy quest.

Waiting until apprentice isn't really that much harder, but you will need a number of mob drops.
