  • Bridging the gap between 54 and 101?

Is there any "easy" way to bridge the gap between 54 and 101 as a Necro? I say 101 because you can't get the combine container to do the LoY combines until that point yes? I also am somewhat defining "easy" or "hard" as the scale between vendor bought materials, farming, baz sellers, and my pocketbook. I looked at some of the DoD recipes beyond 54 and found that on my server the sulfers and saltpeters would cost ~100pp per combine alone which is ahh... not so appealing to me with my short term goal of getting my research high enough to work some LoY into my tailoring.

I could be missing something as well; some of the LoY swatches triv out at 95 IIRC but you need to have a skill of 101 to even attempt them. Am I understanding that correctly? It seems like the cart before the horse is it were. The practice runes looks like a better option then finding 3 words for old school Necro spell combos but the items don't exactly make their way into the baz. Would love to get some input on skilling up as a necro in general and practice runes in particular - especially the ringmail needed.

    Thanks much in advance.

    Regarding old world Necro recipes:

Words of lower lvl are rare nowadays because players fly by the lower lvls and less words are spawned.

For Necro, I would suggest to ignore the Necro recipes with trivials under 142 and go straight for the 162s and 182s. Cackling Bones, Dead Man Floating, Bond of Death, Invoke Death, Lich, Paralyzing Earth. These are the recipes with words you can find more easily.

Don't worry that you are skilling up on recipes with trivials way above you. Spell Research has a high skillup rate and failed combines will still give you a good chance at skilling up.

And don't worry that you are using up words that you should be saving up for when you are at 100+ skill. Because once you get pass 101, you have other alternatives.

In fact, if your int is 215 or higher, you get the same skill up rate on failures as successes.

Actually, a nice little place to purchase old world necromancer words sold to merchants is in High Keep, just inside Highpass Hold. You might have to be careful in the area, since your class and diety might make you an enemy.

I was weak and went the Oil of Vitrol route to 97. At that point I could equip a geerlock quill and get the advanced book from the dude in GG and start doing LoY combines. My thought was finding 3 words for each combine was nuts, sporatic, and you lost sense of how much you had spent if you went with the baz to buy em. I figured the price of 1 saltpeter (baz) was roughly equal to how much I would spend on all three words. Sulfer is fairly common on merchants and cheap when you do. In the end it was more per combine but I got it done in an hour vs days/weeks/months.

Will have to check out the merchant you mention. Need to find a good source of words of crippling force, comprehension, and constancy as well.

As I've mentioned in Post #2 of this thread, the following are the best necro recipes for skilling up. None of them need 3 words. Some need only 1 word. And these drop from lvl40ish mobs which makes them the most common (because players from lvl 30 to lvl 60 kill lvl 40 mobs).

Cackling Bones - words of collection (caza), words of obligation
Dead Man Floating - words of burnishing, words of the psyche
Bond of Death - words of grappling, words of odus
Invoke Death - words of acquisition (beza), words of requisition
Lich - words of the ethereal
Paralyzing Earth - words of crippling force

I am aware and appreciative of your post. However, having just looked in the baz I will tell you that with the exception of words of burnishing (20-50pp range) each of those other items are going for 75-400pp per item with quantities of typically of 1 - 3. At the same time I can buy over 100 saltpeter at 40pp /ea (and more starting at 45 etc). If I had to I could buy the sulfer for 10-12pp in probably the same quantity. In the end each combine to get me to 97 would be less then what I could typically buy 1/2 or 1/3 of one combine otherwise. Once you get to 97 you can equip the geerlock quill, get the advanced book and now skill up to 132 for probably 10pp a combine (tears of prexus and/or wing of xegony). Granted those prices are a snap shot in time and prices vary among the servers. To not do LoY though doesn't make sense hense my post /shrug. Will certainly tailor my future combines based on your advice.

well i go nuts if i have to do the same thing too many times. i use whatever happens to be overflowing in my bags when i'm ready to start combining. i used to have a list of stuff i would look for on vendors and in the bazaar but now it's pretty well ingrained in my head (sad but true, 6 years is a heck of a long time). i am a dedicated vendor diver so it's really whatever i happen to haul in each day/week/month. i have 2 accounts, too, so i have more storage than someone on say, firiona vie.

it's really server dependent, you know? my server may have billions of saltpeter available, your server may be overrun with words of the ethereal. varies from day to day, as well: yesterday i bought an entire bag full of saltpeter from various sources. i didn't get a single one all last week...

so its pointless to argue over what's the best route since it will change from day to day and server to server. use whatever works best for you, and thank you for posting your success =) we can never have too many ideas!
