  • Research Questions

Ok, new topic for me. I was prepping a new toon to start work on research, and then the new expansion hit. I have seen several of these questions asked in other threads, but no straight answers. So, here we go.

    1) Is the new system an overlay to the old system? (I think the answer is yes due to the levels involved, but would like verification).

    2) Since the new system allows all research classes to make all research combines, does this carry over to the old system?

Thanks for anyone taking the time to answer these two questions.

    1) yes, its an overlay, not a replacemnet

2)no it doesnt carry over, up until level 60 you cannot research the other INT classes' spells

Unfortunately this is not a skillup path here as the solutions require Crystallized Sulfur, which while obtainable from lowb mobs, is really rare in the baz, or at least on maelin, and which I have yet to find on any ldon vendor. (lots of people doing ldons eh?)

Since dod came out (when I started looking) I've managed to find 4 Crystallized Sulfur, and have been able to make 1 cleaned parchment with them. I've checked the baz several times a day, and ldon merchants a few times, though I guess the constant patching didn't help.

Once you hit 150-ish spell research really begins to suck. It's much worse than smithing and tailoring due to rarity of drops.

My girlfriend and I were looking for Crystallized Sulfurs for her rogue's Poisonmaking. Searching PoK/Bazaar vendors (and the Magi at the LDoN camps), I was able to get about a stack a night. I still see them on vendors (but no longer need them). I would say your luck is rather bad if you've only seen 4 since DoD came out. Of course, they are now more mined, I'm sure...as others are looking for them. So, it may be the norm at the moment.

Crystallized Sulfur drops a lot in Sebilis, Hate, and, as much as no one wants to hear it, in Plane of Growth.

The Plane of Growth mobs drop a gem of some quality every kill (Jacinth, Diamond, Black Sapphire, etc), OR Crystallized Sulfur, you will destroy your faction here, but it was lucrative.

I used to pick up a few of them in Hate runs post-revamp when I would solo there. Sulfur isn't an extremely common drop, but that doesn't make it "not a skillup path," Research is just actually difficult now.

            Crystalllized Sulfer

I run across a lot of these ona daily basis while farming for tailoring, smithing and fletching. It drops in multiple zones. Sorry I can't list these zones or my already crowded farming spots will become more crowded.

What kinds of drop rates are you seeing in those zones? Maybe there are other places I've not farmed that do have decent drop rates, but if it's on the gems table then I doubt the drop rates are decent anywhere.

When you need 60/skillup or more (2 or 3 for sub combines) and can only get a few in an hour I'd say it pretty much sucks, and Research has been difficult ever since they stopped letting people buy points at their GM regardless of what your skill actually is. Skilling up at 250 being difficult due to endless farming is more understandable, but at any skill level, even sub-100, it's just annoying due to lack of availability of drops.

                  You can't research LDoN spells.

Crystallized sulfur is available by the hundreds in bazaar on my server.

                  YMMV.
