What skill do you need for the NPC to give you the books? I tried to get mine since I was in the area and he told me that he was happy I knew the basics of the trade but I wouldn't be able to read the book so he wasn't gonna give me it.

Also, do the combines for the swatches done in these books give you skill ups towards research?

Q: How do I get my Advanced Research Book?

A: Hail Researcher Alvarik (loc 1367, 80) in the Gulf of Gunthak by telling him "I am a ___" (wizard, magician, necromancer, enchanter). in one of the buildings near the lighthouse. You must have the LoY expansion, and a research skill of 101 to get the book.

Yes the swatches give u skill up also. I made approx 6 points out of 15 combines useing the swatch method.
