Another Idea to make research a viable tradeskill again. Lets face it, Research is the {red-headed step} child of EQ tradeskills. It currently can make spells that are now, at its best, 10 full levels below the max spell levels. Also, there is not something it truly can create ( minus the scribed swatches) that can not be obtained by other means. What is truly needed is a product that can ONLY be obtained through research.
My proposal is that research, at the higher levels, be the only means for certain spells. Such spells should be utility spells rather than spells that are directly related to the creators class and could therefore be unbalancing. By utility, I mean spells that might speed certain non-combat situations for a group or a raid. Also some spells would be just "fun" spells; that is to say, spells that are kind of a "trophy" effect that, while not unbalancing, would be desireable enough for the researcher to strive for.
Just to give an idea of where I'm going with this, here are a few examples:
Wizard ( fun spell): Familiarity: Allows the wizard to transform into the aspect of his familiar providing Levitation ( where permitted) and a "Ghetto shrink". May also have a minor buffing effect in minature of the familiar effect
Mage: (Utility) Call of the Chosen: Allows mage to summon an entire group to him. This would be handy on raids where CoH is used ad nauseum.
Pet Classes: Eyes of the (pet name): A scouting utility that allows the caster to use his pet for a short time as a scouting tool as in the wizards' Eye of Tallon. When in this mode, the pet is strictly a scouting device and cannot attack and would pop back to the casters side upon fading of the spell.
Pet Classes: (fun spell)Voice of the (pet name): Voice graft buff for various pets.
Shaman/ Beastlord: (utility) Small World: AE shrink with an accept window ala Teleport/TL.
Clerics (utility) Trump of the Archangel: at a greatly reduced exp modifier ( say about 80% to make a clicky still more desireable in most cases) Cleric may cast an AE rez.
Anyway, you get the idea and can probably think of your own. The main idea is to make the spells desirable without being overbalancing. In most cases, these spells would be just for fun, or speed up a process that the caster would have anyway.
