  • Quills no longer returned

Yesterday my quill got eaten on a successful combine. I thought maybe I hit autoinventory and it put it in one of my bags, but nope. Tried it again. Sure enough, quills get eaten on combines now

Quills have been eaten when making swatches since they went in.

I always assumed they were supposed to be used up.

I noticed this the other day, normal 50-60 spell research combines ran me out of quills (spells not swatches). I got so used to them being returned 100% on practice research it really caught me off guard.

Quill's were returned on practice research??

OK the last time I did practice research was in late 1999, but I certainly don't remember quills being returned then. Perhaps this was a fairly recent glitch that subsequently got fixed?

As far as I remember, all research combines were and are supposed to consume both quill and parchment regardless of success or failure.

Yeah, quills are returned doing practice research - just finished making a couple stacks of magi beza runes & did not consume a single quill. Making the beza/azia runes are no-fail; combining the azia & beza runes don't require quill/parchment and only then are you getting a skill-up chance.

Memory may be failing me, but I seem to recall quills & parchments were once unstackable as were 95% of the other components needed - and to aid researchers prior to stacking components - quills were changed to be consumed only during actual spell combines. I have a memory of long ago having a full inventory of non-stackable research components (5 per beza/azia rune required), quills & parchments and getting depressed that I could only attempt skill-ups 5 times before depleting my entire inventory & having to restock.
