  • Is my logic flawed, or smithing on 8th shawl can be skipped?

I just got 7th shawl. My tailoring/smithing/JC are all at above trivial range for the 8th.

However, I have a couple friends who also have 7th shawl, but so far put off going for the 8th cause smithing is a pain.

My logic is based on following:
    1. Approved box, Combined kit and Issue box are all different items.
    2. 7th shawl can be used as many times as you want to get an issue box.
    3. Once war is finished, anyone can turn in approved 7th shawl to avatar of below. And get his 8th.

So, we farm all the velium, hound fur and gems, I stash it all. Make one set of armor, summon Dain, get issue box, combine my kit, hand to Dain, get Approved box and marching orders.
I make another set of armor, use my 7th shawl to get another issue box, and combine the Kit. Then, use shawl again to get yet another issue box.
We run 8th shawl war for me.
1st friend uses his shawl to summon Dain, I turn in the kit, get approved box and orders. I give those to General, starting the war, but it's my friend who hands in the 7th shawl to Avatar - will that work?
I make yet another armor set, and combine it in the box. Now, 2nd friend can summon Dain for me to do the turn-ins and start his war.

Yeah, I know, 'tis underhanded and against the 'spirit of craftsmanship', but think it'll work? Or there is a snag somewhere?

The only problem I can see is that there are 2 different 7th shawls (approved and non-approved). I am not sure if anyone has tried the hand in with the just made not handed in (not-approved) version. If you have the approved version and you know someone willing to wait for Dain to pop for the handin then sure it should work.

Non-approved shawl won't work to hand in to the Avatar.

        This could be interesting.

        Aluaeia, have you tried it?

You HAVE to approve the shawl for the Avatar to take it, I've done an entire walkthrough only to have the person have to go get their shawl approved since the Avatar refused the shawl(I have no use for this) since it was the wrong one.

I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work, so long as the shawl given to the Avatar is approved.

Well, if you read my post carefully, both other people would need to hand in their shawls to Cristof to summon Dain for armor kit turn in, making the shawls approved in the first place. Just to be on safe side, they can also give shawl to Dain, and then get books and issue box from Lorekeeper.

The biggest drag here would of course be that person doing the smithing would have to be present at all unrefined gem farming.

It will not work because only the persone who gives the armor to the General can get his or her shawll aproved by the Avatar of abelow. The armor is like a stamp on your shawll. No armor, no stamp, no 8th.

Off-hand, it sounds like it would work fine. Here's how I'd do it.

You have two people, the Smith and the Recipient. Both have the 7th shawl already. Neither has an approved kit or orders for the general.

Smith farms the unrefined gems and farms/buys the furs. Smith makes all the necessary armor pieces.

Smith and recipient go together to see the the Dain. Recipient uses shawl to summon the Dain if need be, then hands his shawl to the Dain. Recipient's shawl is now approved. Recipient also receives a note for the container, which he destroys.

Smith now gives his shawl to the dain, gets the note, turns it in for the box, puts armor in the box, combines, and hands to the Dain. Smith now has the approved issue kit and marching orders.

Smith, Recipient, and their allies head to Iceclad. Smith hands kit and orders to the general. The Walk is walked, The Fights are fought, Avatar spawns. Recipient hands his (approved) shawl to the Avatar and gets his 8th shawl. No smithing skill needed.

That's not right, the armor is made by the smith, turned in to Dain by the smith, turned in to the General by the smith. Everyone's shawl is approved. The general does not touch the 7th shawl so there is no new flag on it. There is really no reason why a second person cannot turn in their approved 7th to the Avatar.

I guess my biggest question would be if you manage to get your skills up enough to do the 7th shawl then the getting them up for the 8th really is not all that hard.

Once you have gotten past shawls 5 and 6 its really down hill from that point. Its the biles for shawl 5 and the final combine on the 6th that are the killer parts of this quest.

This can be done, I know someone that has done it this way without a problem.

The smithing isn't skipped, the work is just transfered to someone else.
But yes you can do it this way.
