I'm sure this has been asked before but after going through 8+ pages, I haven't found anything that answers, if you fail on the combine for the 5th shawl, do you lose the 4th?

No, you never lose the previous shawl on combines if you fail. You just lose all other items though.Originally posted by RehmyI'm sure this has been asked before but after going through 8+ pages, I haven't found anything that answers, if you fail on the combine for the 5th shawl, do you lose the 4th?

Actually, I think you DO lose the shawl on the first couple, but I believe it's been confirmed that starting with the 4th shawl, you always get back the previous shawl on a failed combine.Rehmy wrote:

No, you never lose a previous shawl unless you do something goofy like destroy it or give it to the wrong npc (if there are any left that don't give back things they don't want). If you fail any of the three combines where your shawl is an ingredient, you will always get that shawl back.
And yes, that's in the guide

Heh, 5th shawl is where it gets ugly.
I am not entirely sure, what I would rather prefer on 5th combine: lose the 4th shawl, but keep the rest, or vice versa(the way it is now). Yeah, farming stuff for 3rd shawl was tedious, but it's all in one zone, and it's easy.
I failed my 5th once at 118 tailoring, was VERY unhappy. I haven't hunted velium hounds yet, but so far it was components for 5th that taxed my patience the most.
Once you are past 5th, the shawl is way more valuable. Components for 6th are fairly easy. For 7th, once you make your burin, blood and shell are the only hard items.Bregalad Alcarin, High Elf Coercer, Xev <In Via Dämnum>

Ouch, I got my tailoring up to 160 before doing the 5th combine - farming those @#$% biles and threads was not worth having to redo.
The 6th shawl final combine was the only combine I failed in the entire shawl process though - I was rather fortunate with the others, although I did get all of my skills to trivial or better.
No more EQ for me till they fix the crash bug.

I had 4 failed combines total
3 times on 6th shawl (/sob.. **** I got so sick of killing sirens)
and I failed the armorcrafting combine for the leggings on the 8th shawl (Had 182 smithing + geerlok so it was trivial.. just bad luck)
I think I failed one or two thread combines, but I gathered 92 threads in one evening at Upper Spiders in Velks, so it wasn't a loss or anything.

i have my 6th shawl and all the components/tradeskills needed for the 7th except for the royal kromrif blood (which we're planning on getting in a few days), so i cant speak for the 8th shawl, but I would honestly do the first, second, third, fourth, sixth(yes, the three tries it took me), AND what i have of the 7th (even the swordfish tooth) over farming threads and biles over again. In the 5th shawl guide it says "...but when you get on to the higher ones, you'll get downright nostalgic about the easy golden days of the fifth shawl..." Nope. This is BY FAR the worst for me.
Man do I feel sorry for you Grimrose and everyone else that failed the fifth shawl combine, especially those that failed it more than once.
And to answer the original question: You always get back your previous shawl on a failure that used it. You also get back your burin in the 7th shawl, whether you fail or not. I'm pretty sure it eats everything else.

Failed 5th five times !!!!!! OMG. THat must have been awful.
I failed once at 118 tailoring, and then after recollecting (and ranting a lot here) i got my 5th shawl on 2nd attempt. Was at 132 skill at the time.
All i can say is goodluck and if you fail /HUG...
...and look for the GLOWING Shardwurms !!!!

Interesting, there seems to be a progression in number of combines that'll but you back to square one over the shawls. However, the LOSS on failure diminishes.
5th: one combine, the final one. Other possible fails are making fibres, but those just require you to farm 5 more threads. But if you fail final, you lose 5 rare drops and 75(!) common ones, all NODROP
6th: two combines. Making the thread and the final. Failing either results in losing 4 semi-rare and 3 common drops.
7th: three combines. filling rune with ink, attaching to casing, sewing it to shawl. You lose one semi-rare drop, and one rare - both tradeable. Kromrif blood goes for 4-6kpp, EB shells about 400pp on Xev bazaar.Bregalad Alcarin, High Elf Coercer, Xev <In Via Dämnum>

5th Shawl Failures
At the risk of being lynched, I made my 5th shawl attempt with tailoring at 115, no geerlock, and succeeded on the first try. Granted, I'd failed once or twice making the swatches, but that was easily remedied. Currently I'm working on the 6th, trying to work up the nerve to take on the sirens.
