  • 7th Shawl Info about Swordfish

    Hello everyone,

I just finished 7th shawl and all of 8 except the actual war. I want to share some of my insights about the Swordfish tooth drop which isn't in the write up by Verdandi.

First of all, the write up seems to indicate that it may be possible to solo the swordfish near the succor point. I went there to reconoiter some and see if I thought it was doable. First off, Siren's Grotto will strip SOE and probably lev. I didn't try just SOW. Second, the swordfish are immune to changes in run speed, ie. no snare or root. Third and most important, swordfish see invis.

This combination of factors plus the underwater fighting makes them extremely difficult if not impossible to solo. I jumped into the water near the water fall with 10 min fixed duration invis, and was immediately agroed by one of them. No snare, no root, constant interrupts and for some reason couldn't jump out of the water, may have been my panic. I died on that attempt and got a rez from a guildie. Next night I went back with 3 friends. Three of us were 59 and had a bored 46 enchanter with us who was willing to try it for kicks. Even with the 4 of us it was a risky fight at first until we got our act together. One was a 59 mage and another 59 druid. The way we finally did it was summon a mage pet, buff it and ourselves to teh max, jump in, pull with malosini from mage, and send the pet in. The other druid and I CH the pet as needed. The first swordfish near the waterfall can be single pulled, the next one can't and you'll always get 2 with this one. It took us 5 swordfish to get tooth and there were a few iffy minutes while we worked out a strategy.

Thanks for all the info here on EQ traders and the write ups by verdandi.

You can use a lull type spell to easily single pull the next two fish.

SOW and the GB version will both stick - lev and SOE are both stripped - this has gotten me nearly killed in WW several times as I ran off cliffs not knowing when I'd lost my lev/SOE.

The fish does blow off druid snare and SK darkness spells. Good news is that he's got a small aggro radius. We didn't have a chance to try a stun spell on him - that might be a good thing to try.

This combination of factors plus the underwater fighting makes them extremely difficult if not impossible to solo.
This fish can't be solo'd melee by anyone who will get XP off of him - he's got too many hitpoints, hits too fast and does too much damage to boot.

Our stratagy was having a normal warrior use his fighting discs, make sure the tanks were all DS'd and then pump as much damage into the fish while making sure the MA held aggro for ease of healing.

No more EQ for me till they fix the crash bug.

As a druid, I can usually solo it if three things happen:

If I can get just one at a time

          If I can snare/root it

If I can reliably land spells on it

My point was based on the information on the guide, I would have tried to solo it. If I knew it saw invis and couldnt be snared or rooted there is no way I would have tried to solo it. I just wanted to get that out there for others who may be about to try it too so they can be a little better informed before they make that decision.

Just finished the 7th shawl myself last night and thought I'd post my Swordfish info.
First off - Shaman, level 56.

I zoned into SG from CS, checked to make sure no one else was in the zone, Invised, and ran/swam through SG to the WW side. I never lost my invis, but I'm sure I aggroed some seahorses (note: It took me 3 tries to get my courage up to make the mad dash across the zone. The other 2 times I aggroed a seahorse, lost invis, and swam back and zoned into CS).

I zoned back in to SG, followed the right wall to the pool at the top of the waterfall, and jumped in (EB item in use). Summoned and buffed pet. Tried to pull one swordfish and got 2. Pet lasted long enough for me to get out of the water and into a corner to re-invis.

Jumped back in and did the pet thing over again. Saw the wandering swordfish near the mouth of the pool, and pulled it with slow. I fought along side my pet, Bane of Nife poison dot, applied 4 times, healing myself as needed (note: no KEI, WIS was 230). As the swordfish turned at about 10% health, I hit it with Shock of Venom twice to finish it off. Dropped the tooth.

I attribute the success to the shaman haste and slow, without which I'm sure the swordfish would made quick work of me.

I've soloed the swordfishes many times, since it doesn't have a 100% drop rate, and I failed the stupid burin combine the first time (only fail on 7th though, I can't really complain), then again for a friend who was scared of SG (I hate icy/watery servants, and the named sirens, that's about it, never fought neriads.)

              The key?

Charm a servant sea mammal. Yeah, they're druid charmable (so are seahorses but they break every 3 seconds, never tried charming the fish).

With a mid-50s Shaman this fight is not too bad. If you have one 61+ even better because they get their better pet and spells.

I duo'd this at 52 with a 63 Shaman .. wasnt much trouble ..the trouble was we needed 2 =\
