  • Its not that tough (shawl)

As a 53 Druid, I completed the 8th shawl today. (wave to Order of the Sage, Triune Alliance, Omani, Lost Boys and all the others representing that escape my memory at this moment) Looking back on it, I have to say it wasn't as tough as I imagined it to be. Granted I took Verdandi's advice to heart, thus he prepared me mentally at least for the task.

So perhaps I can offer a few words of encouragement to those out there working on this quest, and share some thoughts on what made this go pretty smoothly for me.

First off I had a few advantages going for me that some may not have. I love tradeskills, thus prior to starting this quest, most of my tradeskills (exception of JC and Fletching) were at the level they needed to be. Still tho at some point I had to raise those skills.

Here are my tips and advice:

    1) DONT RUSH IT!! Do not feel like you have to accomplish certain tasks by a certain time, you will only feel frustrated and burned out. This quest is a time consuming one, and that is what people perceive make it difficult. If you forget how long you spend looking for bile or hairs, it wont seem so bad.

    2) Work on your tradeskills during your spare time. Guild not raiding tonight? Tired of leveling? Go work on your tradeskills, any of them! Buy up some fletching material, grab a pole+bait, go to Iceclad and fish while you fletch. Most of the skills will be just time consuming clicking. Only tailoring will require you to farm, or purchase items off players.

    3) Buy everything you can. Always be on the lookout for shawl items for sale. If you rush it, you will be desperate for a runed sea shell and may end up paying thousands of plat for, same for blood. If you take your time and casually keep your eyes open, you will find the items you need for a decent price.
Example: I kept my eyes open and eventually paid 500pp for the blood and 150pp for the runed sea shell on Bertoxx. These items sat in my bank for a good while till I was ready for them, but I had them out of the way. So for a measly 650pp I just saved myself a huge headache. Also I feel I got a good deal, I know others who have paid in the thousands for the same items.

    4) This is especially good for the Hairs and Tooth. If you have a friend who is looking to do the quest as well, bring them along to camp the sirens for the hair and the swordfish for the tooth. I (52 Druid at the time) have a (62 at the time) Shaman friend. Together we were able to get the hairs we needed painlessly. I tracked, we both DoTed, dead Siren fast. Same for swordfish in SG. Sat by the waterfall, pulled the swordfish, rinse repeat as needed. Since I had a friend there, I had a good time. We joked around, had fun, killed other random mobs. It didnt feel like a boring camp.
This also goes for the threads. Good way I have found is to get a small group and camp Frenzy. Loot the threads while waiting for the named to pop for decent gear.

    5) Be prepared to do the 6th shawl twice. Unless your tailoring is 200+ -plan- on doing the 6th twice. So when you camp the hairs, get 4 not 2. Again dont let yourself get frustrated by this.

    6) Money is a must. You need money for almost every step of the way in this quest. May it be to buy items or work on your tradeskills, get yourself a small fortune of plat. For most people #8 will be most costly unless they took the time to farm the velium blocks and furs. I was lucky here because I collect this stuff from guildmates in return for merit points. We then dole the tradeskill stuff out to people as needed.

    7) For the final walk, have your friends ask their friends. Make everything open role (this is assuming its a pickup escort and not a guild planned one). Usually 3 of the 5 items will drop on the walk, as well as some desired pages. If its your shawl, dont roll on the dropped items .. your getting the shawl! Make sure you thank everyone and offer to help them on their walk.

Thats it for tips that I can think of. If other people have some, feel free to shout em out.

The tradeskills has always been the hard part of this quest. I know when the 8th shawl first came out, a necro friend of mine has his 7th shawl eaten by the dain. In the 1.5 days of petition time it took to get it back, he had the 7th one already redone.

But even then, the tradeskills are not that tough, just time consuming and aggravating on your wrist.

Fletching- Raise cheaply to 202 on storebought material
Pottery- Cheap store bought material 199
Jewel Crafting- You can go all the way to 250, but even 191 wont cost you more than 2500pp
Brewing- You can take this to 250 cheaply
Baking- While you only need to be 130ish for the quest, you can take it pretty high with storebought material
Smithing- Is annoying since the May 8th patch (Thankfully got my smithing to 177 prior) but it isnt horrible. Much like the sellback on JC, you still get most of your money back. Taking your smithing to 165-170 is sufficient for this quest
Tailoring- Storebought to 76, then Greyhopper Hide to 95, HQ cat to 115, thats all easy. Then either crystalline silk to your mid 130s or straight through to Wu's till 158. Now with the ribbons some people might even want to take it a little further as the cost for combines isnt horrible.

So for the vast majority of the tradeskill raising portion of this quest, it is a matter of having some cash onhand, some spare time and the willpower to do all those clicks.

        All I gotta say it

        LOL

Sorry, but the shawl quests are gut wrenching no matter how gradually you do it.

Trivial failures are your enemy, and your enemy always strikes when you least expect it.

keeping an eye out for the blood and shell are both a good idea and you may get lucky, but that doesn't mean you won't eat a trivial failure and have to either spend a long time looking for another cheep blood and/or shell, or have to go get them yourself.

For the 6th shawl I'd say be prepared to do it five times. Chances are you'll succeed on the 3rd or 4th if you trivialized Wu's armor. I know people who got it the first try at 120 tailoring, and one dude that failed 12 times with approx 200 tailoring. It took me 4 tries with 161.

My suggestion: It's better to be overcautious than to try to get away with abre minimum. For example, for 8th shawl, get 10 velium furs before you start, with 43 combines to do total there's a very high likelyhood you'll fail at -least- two of these even if all are trivial due to the 5% average failure rate... for 7th shawl bring a friend and get 2 runed shells, 2 bloods, etc... if you blow it, you've got a backup set ready to go.. if not, well, you can sell and/or give to a friend doing the quest.

I agree that the tradeskills are the hardest part of the quest, but Valorale is also right that they are not so much difficult as time-consuming and being patient makes everything less painful, even fun.

I didn't have to work on tradeskills to get the shawl for my main, but I also have shawl 7 so far for my druid and plan to do the quests for my cleric and enchanter also. The key is to plan ahead, gather a few supplies here and a few there as you see them on vendors or kill the right mobs in the course of other things. Then, when you have an hour with nothing else to do, run off a batch of skill-up combines in whatever tradeskill. If you don't mind working on it over a matter of several months, it will never seem like as much of a grind as gaining levels does.

I completed the 8th shawl quest 3 times for 3 different characters. Helped 4 other guildies finish theirs and other than the time sink involved in some of farming, it's not that difficult. Did them before SoL came out so no bazaar feature for me :/

The 6th shawl seemed to be the one that at up most of my time.
