  • 4th coldain shawl: Finding Tanik

There is an easier way to find the trigger spots than to walk around until you find them. Unfortunately it only works for classes who have pets or can charm pets. What you do is either summon or charm (snow bunnies in the area work nicely) a pet and then go to the top part of the Kael ramp. Put your pet on guard and it will point towards the nearest NPC. Walk in that direction and you should find a trigger spot for either Tanik or the death squad

PS: It's a lot easier if you get a friend, who has a pet andwhose not kos to the death squad to help ya do this... when they spawn tanik... just walk out and hand him the potion...

      Traps!

One of my mules on my second account is a level four mage who exists SOLELY for this purpose. It is the only sane way to do this, especially if you need to do it for more than one person.

When I got there, two other people were running around looking for him. Obviously, this was gonna take forever, so I made the mage, PLed him to the level at which he could bind, then ported him over and mad-dashed for the Kael Ramp to bind. Not much more than an hour later, all three of us had gotten Tanik.

(I used my pony to outrun the squads after I got tired of killing them, which was very quickly, and they despawn very quickly. Be careful, though. Don't get people dead.)

        From Khoren's sig:
Master of all Skills and Languages
I don't see 250 tinkering so you can't claim that!!!

        Maybe it should say:

Finding Tanik: The story of a Mage and a Naked Ogre

I thought I'd delurk to tell a little tale about how a friend of mine and I locate Tanik.

Myself, I'm a magician. My friend, well, let's just say we felt that an Ogre was the best choice for a spotter, because he's big enough to see from a distance, he has infravision which makes seeing a red-lit pet at night easy, and most importantly, Ogres can worship Rallos Zek. This is key.

If you worship Rallos Zek, the Death Squad likes you.

From there, it's a simple matter of triangulation. Summon a pet. I prefer using Monster Summoning for this to get an Ulthork. Reason being they're big enough to see from a distance, and it's easy to tell exactly which way he's facing, both from a distance and from up close (because you can stand in the Ulthork and tell that way, since you still see his tusks -- getting the exact direction he's facing is important).

Run the Ogre out away from the pet in a straight line (stand IN your pet to help determine this).

          Now it's time to triangulate.

Move your pet around to either the left or right (you want to move AWAY from the ramp area!), put him on guard again, and stand in your pet again. Tell the Ogre to move along his first path until he lines up with the way your pet is facing again. They _should_ pop immediately with the Ogre getting in front of your pet in the new position again. If not, have him scoot around that area at WALK speed for a bit, sometimes you'll miss the pop if he's running.

The Death Squad will depop after about 2-3 minutes, then you need to tell your pet to follow you and guard again to retarget, and you can continue the process.

Doing it this way, you should be able to find each spawn in no more than a minute or two, with no risk at all -- the Death Squad and occasional wandering Kromrif won't aggro the Ogre, so no downtime for combat or dead spotters. You should find Tanik easily within 20-30 minutes, and that's only if you have to hit every spot.

Did a month ago or so when I helped someoene. I like to charm the mammoths and stand inside them and use the tusks to target.

                Oo! Mammoths!

I hadn't thought about using mammoths. I've never gotten one with Monster Summoning, but it'd be fun to try. <GRIN>

I've done several runs using this method within the past month or so, it's all still good.

The only original trick for finding Tanik that doesn't work anymore is the "put an item on your cursor and click around to try to trade with the spawn point" thing. When Luclin came out, it had a new way for mobs to spawn (for example, out in the Grey, mobs will spring out of little dustclouds on the ground) and it looks like they went back and re-did the Death Squad / Tanik ones so we couldn't use that trick anymore.

But pet tracking still works like a charm.

Just an fyi, in order to remove the coin trick they simply made it impossible to give an item to a hidden npc. It was not a spawn-by-spawn change but a change to the code of the game. Before this you could also use a coin to target the Spires in the Nexus (the sources of the emotes "Antonica Spire begins to cast a spell") and any of the other traps and emote triggers that are impossible to find except via pet.

                      Fouth Coldain Shawl: Finding Tanik

First of all I want to thank everyone at EQ Traders for all of thier amazing work in creating this website.

My hubby and I just finished the 4th shawl last night. (yay!) We were both using the pet method to locate the spawn points (I am a Druid and he is an Enchie) and had been doing so individually at the various locations. I believe after about the fifth Death Squad that we spawned, there was a resounding bong accross the zone when we both realised that, using both pets, we could traingulate the spawn location to within feet by having each pet guard a short distance from the other.

As you probably know, guarding pets will look towards the nearest NPC. By having both of the pets looking in the direction of said NPC you can judge by the angle that they are pointing, (A) whether they are pointing at the snow bunny half way accross the zone and (B) if their line of sight converges and you do not see an NPC, this is either the guy you are looking for or the guys you want to run away from.

We used Mamoths as pets so that they could stand up to the Death Squads for long enough that we could gate out of the area. At first my hubby was using giants, but beacuse they can't be stuned ot mezed when they broke the charm, and mamoths can, we found it was less dangerous to use the Mamoths. (and I always wanted to have a hephalump as a friend so I was biased from the get go)

After we figured this out, it only took us about an hour to get both of our spawns of the poor little Dwarf. Though we were lucky enough to get two spawns in a row.

                      I hope this helps.

I completed my fourth shawl last week with the help of an enchanter friend. We found that walrusses worked very well. Since their bodies are long and horizontal, they act as a perfect arrow toward Tanik or the death squad.

My method is much more scientific. I spent an hour running around spawning Death Squad after Death Squad until I finally got tired of it and started back to Thurg. *BAM* Dorf falls into my lap and scares the heck out of me.

                            Walrus

Yep, I used the walrus with my Druid too. They are nearby, easy to charm, and you can easily figure out what direction they are pointing. Found 5 death squads and then Tanik. I am now the proud owner of the 4th shawl!
