  • sharval progressive smithing guard shields workaround

I have noticed that the guards get their new shields quicker then you can repair them. I have also noticed the guard respawn with a new shield immidiately after giving him the work order. On a fluke I tried out something and it worked out.

When I repair a shield I immediately ask for another work order. When I get back to the guard, if he is hlding a shield I give him the work order. I will now have a dented shield and an immaculate shield. I give the guard the good shield and I will recieve the completed work order. I then destroy the bad shield he gave me. It means a little more work but the quest gets done this way.

At least for me, the guards never appeared to not have a shield, at least not when they're supposed to be "handing" it to me. So even if I could have gone and fixed it instantly, it wouldn't have been fast enough. So I had little choice but to do it this way...

I actually saw two gaurds standing on top of one another and when I hailed them I got two responses. Wierd! The easiest way to do this quest was as you described. :-)

This is the easiest way to do this quest. However, I have noticed something interesting. When you hand in the repair order, they get another shield right away. So that does not work. However, I destroyed a repaired shield by mistake so I had to go back for second order after a guard got another shield. When I went back and give him the second repair order, he will not have the shield and gives you enough time to go repair the shield and come back. So if you missed a chance to turn in a repaired shield, you just have to turn in the order the second time and you will have enough time to go for second repair without having to start it all over.

I think the problem is an old one that's a familiar bug with these guards. What you're actually seeing is the guards double spawning, with two copies of the exact same mob standing in the exact same spot. If you were to push one of them slightly, you'd be able to see this.
Since the guards are static spawns, they always spawn in the exact same spot, and thus when there are two of them there, there's no way to tell that this is the case.
I would highly recommend that you always get a second work order when working on the shields, and hand it in before you return the shield. That way, you can guarantee that you hand the shield in to a guard that doesn't have his shield. It would be very bad if you were to accidentally hand it in to the wrong guard, after all.

I need to do this quest, but I'm really confused by your description of the "shortcut". I understand the multiple spawnings on the same spot and that turning in <thingie> to the wrong one would suck, but could you describe again what you're talking cuz I r dim-witted, hu-yuck. =)

When you aproach the guard with the new shield you will see another guard superimposed upon your target. This secondary guard has a shield already. It seems you can't target the guard you want so you initiate the quest again with the secondary guard. This causes the double image to cancel into 1 guard with no shield. Do turn in, rinse and repeat with other 3 guards.
