  • 8th Shawl- Geonids& Smithing

Is there some sanity to making shimmering geonids to pop? I've been down there close to 8 hours and seen 2 shimmering geonids. Are there PHs for them. I'm an enchanter, is a tracker vitally important to find the shimmering or just a lot of luck is needed? Can anyone say? Just keep killing and praying?

Also. Any Idea how much plat it takes to get from 111 to 187 and how to get there cheapest way( or just fine steel)?

Thanks for the help.. Getting there Ever so slowly. :?

I've done both, used a tracker and just killed everything in sight. I found the best way was to use a tracker, kill the ones that are up, then leave and come back another day. I've spent hours killing geos and only had a very few spawn while I was there.

With more and more people doing the 8th shawl now, though, this might not be as much of an option. I did my harvesting when no one fought the geos.

Kill everything. I got all of my gems in a little more than 3 hours that way.

It worked for my wurm biles, it worked for my genos, mass murder can work for you too! (tm) /jk

question... (forgive me, as I cannot search the main site at work for this info)

are the shimmer geonids on the general geonid faction? I don't want to screw up that since I'm planning to do the Phenocryst Focus quest.

But...if you are a class that has a spiritstone or teleports it is possible to get your geonid faction up relatively painlessly. If you're not of those classes it's still possible, but you'll want a pocket porter if at all possible. All you need otherwise is indifferent or better geonid faction and small pieces of velium. I wrote these instructions for a fellow barb shaman, but adapt as necessary:

              1. Mem lev, shrink, and invis to use as necessary.
              2. Go to Thurgadin.
              3. Go down to Normon Stonetooth in the mines.
              4. Say to him "I will do a favor" for a pick to fix.
              5. Go to Harkon in town.
              6. Give Harkon the mining pick and a small piece of velium.
              7. Take the fixed mining pick to Normon and receive the velium focus.
              8. Say to Normon "I will do a favor" to get another pick to fix.
              9. Get yourself to Wakening Lands.
              10. Run to the Phenocryst and bind yourself right next to it.
              11. Give the Phenocryst the velium focus.
              12. Use your spiritstone to gate to Everfrost.
              13. Run to the PoK book and hop back to Thurgadin.
              14. Go to Harkon in town and give him the pick you got in step 7.
              15. Go to Normon and get another pick to fix.
              16. Gate to the Phenocryst and give him the focus.
              Repeat steps 12-16.

It took approximately 3-6 repetitions to get through each level of faction, as some are bigger than the others. The faction hits for killing the geonids are relatively small, so it is very feasible to use this quest to keep from going kos.

I killed about 12 spawn points continuously, and eventually saw shimmering geonids spawn at every one of them. Just kill everything till they pop.

after several hours of camping these.. it seems to me shimmers can pop in any spawn spot, adn they seem to happen about 1 in 10 or a little less.

However, I have also noticed they seem to come in "waves".

I almost never get a single shimmer. I will go whole rooms of a spawn cycle with none, then the next cycle will pop 2 or 3.

Makes me wonder if there is a time linkage to their spawn.

If you plan on doing the Phenocryst quest, better get it done first !

I had to just kill Geonids over and over and wait for shimmerings to pop. They can pop in any spot, just have to keep killing the regular ones until they do.

Is there some sanity to making shimmering geonids to pop? I killed a room of 5 geonids plus side wall of 2 repeatedly. Averaged around 1 shimmering an hour, but they came in waves (i.e. none for 3 hours, then 4 in a row). Tracking didn't help that much, because the shimmerings were usually engaged so I just stopped going after them unless I knew someone camping the area had recently left.

Also. Any Idea how much plat it takes to get from 111 to 187 and how to get there cheapest way( or just fine steel)? I did FS and spent about 7k. I bought hides and farmed the silks to make my leather padding. I opted not to get smithing up to 187, thought it was smarter and cheaper just to get it to 170 and start attempting. I had no failures on the armor (used gearlok and had focus).

the oozes and the geniods DONT like each other....you can train the ooze to the genoids then camp out.. new geniods will spawn, and you only have to kill the shims

I would avoid using Unidin's advice...that's intentional training and can get you banned!

rofl...they gonna be bannin alot of newbies for training mobs to guards. If the geniods like you enough to protect you against the evil oozes, then so be it.

I just killed the geniods. I was still getttin decent exp when I did it.

The shimmering are random and they all get reset when there's a patch. There's usually 8 or so up after a patch.

After each patch I'd go to Thurgadin and do the quest with the pick. Then I'd run to the geonids and turn it in to Phenocryst for faction. Then I'd kill all the shimmering ones (solo) (and a couple would respawn as shimmering too). One quest is enough to counter at least ten geonid kills, probably 20, so my faction with geonids stayed good.

The geonids are still blue up to level 60, they're actually a good place to solo for xp. If you're careful and not KOS you can usually fight one without adds.
