  • 5th Shawl Quest - Seeing the Glowing Shardwurms

I have noticed that races with infravision (in particular wood elves and high elves) seem to be unable to see the glowing shardwurms at night while humans have no problem.
The woodelf druid in my guild that had done the quest spent hours hunting shardwurms while the human druid had simply found the glowing ones.
The woodelf warrior I grouped with to hunt the wurms couldn't see them glow but the human monk could.
Being an enchanter my solution to this was simply to use the human illusion spell so that I could see the wurms that glowed.
I just thought this information might prove useful.

    Thanks,

    Hello

Not sure if that is correct and I am human and have a helm with ultravision and I tried both ways to me i could see the glowing wurms in ultravision as well without the ultravision so I thinking there really isn't a difference could be wrong though.

While it's true wood elves have a harder time seeing the glowing wurms (as do other see in the dark races), it's not impossible to see them.
It IS impossible to see it if you have dynamic lighting off.

As a kitty with infravision, I had no trouble seeing the glow -- though I found that my Charred Guardian shield (a lightsource) did make it more difficult to distinguish. If you're glowing, it's harder to tell if it's you or something else glowing! So usually unequip it when searching for these pesky wurms.

Three biles down, all 75 threads combined into fibers, now only two glowing biles and the last few combines to go!

Ohhh I killed Young Shardwurms for a couple of hours last night and not a single bile. I want to complete this quest! I am a wood elf so will report back if I notice the glow or not.

Woodelf Druid, only piece of equipment on me that might have produced some light was my Seal of Thoridain... and I had no problems spotting the "glowing" Wurms when I was doing this part of my shawl quest.

Just got my 5th shawl done last night. Erudite chanter here. Had no problems seeing the glowing wurms at night. That is the distinguishing factor though. Sometimes its difficult to tell if its night or not in GD, so the best way is to either use /time or to get on a hill and look down to see how far off you can see the crystals glowing. I could see the wurms that glowed as they moved across the landscape by the glow before I could even see the wurms themselves. Trouble is, they're not all that common. The scorched earth policy here is best. I chose the south end of the tunnel because its less populated with people and there are a ton of wurms that wander back and forth across the river. Kill everything in sight, so that the respawn may bring you a wurm with the bile. Also of note, I got all of my biles off young shardwurms, and not a single one from elders that wander down there.

I found 2 of the glowing wurms tonight. They were difficult to see but I have my gamma up full normally. I changed this when I realised that the glow was quite stuble. Only 3 more to go. :-)

                  Biles

I've noticed them come in spurts - like all random numbers in EQ. One night 5 hours with no biles. The next night 4 in 5 minutes (I only needed 3).

Make sure you don't have dynamic lighting turned off in your EQ settings. I got 4 biles for my enchanter last night and the shardwurms with the biles definitely glowed very brightly at night. You could actually see a huge patch of light under them as if they were wielding a lightstone.

When you finally see a glower, then you'll realize either 1) you finally got your dynamic lighting setting correct and 2) you just hadn't see any yet.

I've hunted for the biles 3 separate times; the second time, I found all 5 biles in about 3 hours, the 3rd time, it took me 20. Just luck of the draw on spawns.

But as a woodie with glowing items, still no problemo.

I have spent about 20 hours in ten sessions hunting for biles. I have gotten exactly one bile in that time. I saw the glow, I know what I am looking for, I just have horrible luck with these sort of camps. I spent over three days trying to get Lord Berg. in Sol A for my epic.

I'm trying to get a better fix on spawn rate & rules. Does anyone seen two bile enabled wurms up at once? Is that possible? Has anyone seen bile wurms occur more frequently in a single area? I am tempted to bring a few friends to GD and start slaughtering every wurm in the zone until they start forkin over the loots, but I'm curious if that would help at all.

To answer your question, YES two bile-carrying wurms can be up at the same time. I got extremely lucky with number 4 and 5. Number 4 was standing on the river so I didn't notice the glow, but killed him for fun. I noticed Number 5 was glowing while killing Number 4 and was pleasantly surprised when I went back and looted!

The main difference might be humans are more likely to have dynamic lights on. =)

                            /dynamic on

is a must for glowing wurm hunting.

The wurms themselves don't show up as any brighter, but their surroundings do.

I spent about 4 hours total time getting my biles.. not exactly a rip-roaring-good-time, that's for sure... basically I alternated killing wurms at night and killing wolfs during the day for whiskers.
4 of the 5 biles I got where, oddly, inside the caves off wurms I wasn't sure if they had biles or not.. however the last one I -did- notice a change in the glow around it as it waddled up the creek, so I took it out and there was my 5th bile.
The one that I did kill out in the open was veyr obviously glowing, even with my kitty vision... was pretty lucky too as someone else was hunting them at the time and he was in the proceess of running the opposite way when I spotted the glow.
