Ok, I wandered into velks and had a brief look around the entrance. Spotted a Crystal statue and pulled it, which proceeded to do excessive amounts of damage to me It didn't help that my haste faded halfway through the fight, but i'm going to try and finish the quest for the Ethereal Cleansing spell as I definately need a quick form of combat healing.

On the plus side, I picked up a glowing wurm bile from a young shardwurm after only killing around half a dozen of them - wiating for my LoH to refresh.

The Crystal Statues (which don't drop the threads) are significantly harder than the spiders, so don't be too discouraged.

And Ethereal Cleansing does make the entire process much easier, and much kinder on your mana than root&heal/helm.

Top is best

Having helped 3 other people and done it myself, I would say the top spiders yeild more drops more often. I personally like Velk's (probably b/c I haven't fallen- knock on wood). We went at lvl 52 as well, but definitely needed a group of 4-6 people. Also drag a friend who has been there to show you the way, as someone else mentioned. IF you brought your own grp, divide the velium drops how you see fit, and keep all you get. You'll need it for the 8th- to make it take less room in the bank, check this site's walkthrough on the 8th on how to make it into rings and sheets.

For pulling on the first level, try the far right side. Haven't run into any statues and there are several spiders.

On glowing worm biles, I found most of mine off the younger wurms while flying by on the way to Velks. Night time and gamma turned down to 25%- they stand out like beacons.
