Everyone starts off with the same faction in Thurg. You should be fine and able to do it all.

To qualify that stament, we all start off with not-so-good Coldain faction (not KOS, dubious...I think, it's been a while) We all have to do faction work to be able to do the quests. Basically, to raise your faction, kill dire wolves and giants in GD, then move on to killing Giants in Kael.

If you just started the character, you may have to wait a bit until she can hunt in those zones...however on the plus side as a chanter you have faction spells (Alliance line) that will be helpful, I'm sure.

Hmm, there was a small blurb about faction in the quest write up, actually.

          On this page
One note for the faction-conscious: this quest will require the deaths of countless giants and their wolves. If you are aligned with the giants, you will want to make sure you are willing to sacrifice some giant faction (or the time to repair it), or have friends willing to invest a LOT of time helping you collect things. In some cases you can buy what you need from others, but you'll still have to be extra careful if you want to maintain giant faction.

*displays his shiny Blessed Coldain Prayer Shawl*

I'm pretty sure a blue elven enchanter can do the quest. (Sarcasm.)

(Maxxed coldain and dain factions. Giants loathe me, and I'm non-KoS to dragons now.)

Good luck. The 8th shawl is well worth the effort.

I suck at this game, your mileage WILL vary. My path is probably NON-optimal.

I second that. Other than killing Giants and Sirens, I did little to improve my faction to get my shawl. I'm a DE Magician that worships our dark lord. I'm now in the process of getting my Cleric his, have already progressed to the 6th. Now if those blasted giants would give up some blood I'll have my 7th.

                QUOTE]

I think you'll be killing plenty of these wolves.....

I did mine in tandom with a DE Necro, she had no problem with factions at any time. Good luck.

It figures i would find this thread today!

Last night I was wondering the exact same thing so I went to the Test server and made a copy of my Dark Elf Necro. I had no problem walking all the way to the NPC and initiating the quest dialog.

I did no faction work at all but you will kill alot of things that will improve your faction wtih the dwarves giants wolves other mobs as well as the quests themsleves will give you good dwarf faction. I am at amiable with dwarves with only 4 shawls again ive done nothing to intentionally raise faction with dwarves only going to velious for this quest.

how can you make a copy of your character on the test server? or did you mean just made a de necro and /testbuff ?

To quote from the Allakhazam writeup of "The Velium Focus"
Deep in the bottom of the mines in Thurgadin resides a Coldain named Normon Stonetooth. Talking to him he offers to tell you a secret but he needs a favor done first. If you say, "I will do a favor" he will give you a pick axe and ask that it be sharpened by a smith named Harkon. Harkon is located at Scar's Edge, a weapon shop. Say, "Stonetooth sent me." He will tell you that he will sharpen the pick axe if you give him the pick and a small piece of velium. Give Hakon the Pick Axe and a small piece of Velium and you get some faction, and a new pick axe.
(Emphasis mine.) Guess with whom one gains faction? That's right, the Coldain.

The first part of this quest can be done by anyone who has the requisite small pieces of velium and who can manage to survive, if only by stealth, cunning, or with help, in the Mine in Thurgadin. My Daughter the Wizardess did this, and got up to amiable with the locals before, as it happened, she'd ever killed a Giant. We're thinking of a clever way to do it with my level 16 Granddaughter, next.

The obvious question is, what are the exact faction hits for this step? Does it lower your giant faction?
