  • Prayer Shawl

I'm working on my next prayer shawl (Silken Prayer Shawl, which is #5.) I had all the silk threads I needed (or so I thought) and proceeded to spend 3 days getting the biles. I finally got all 5 and headed to Thurg to make the shawl. I made all the swatches I could, and had 3 silk threads left over. I didn't destroy them (thank goodness.) Then I started doing the fiber/bile combine, and succeeded on all 4 I tried, but when I got to the last one, I had only 2 fibers. It turns out I was 2 stupid threads short.

I can't believe that I miscounted like that. I thought for sure I had enough. I didn't pass up on any threads that did drop, but I could have stayed for another few kills to get the last 2 if I realized it.

*sigh*. So now it's back to Velks for 2 more so I can finish it.

Let me tell you a personal horror story.

Shawl #5 was the worst shawl for me. At the time I tried the first final combine my Tailoring skill (192) was already above the trivial level. Despite this fact the RNG decided I needed a lesson in patience and frustration for I fail the final combine a total of 5 times before finally succeeding.

Moral of the story is don't sweat the small stuff

Just don't leave your freshly-made shawl 5 in a loom. *cough*

Ouch, that does sound painful. Do you lost the shawl if you fail the combine?

Can you leave the shawl in the loom? I thought it was no drop? (are you on FV?)

No, you do not lose your shawl on any of the final combines. You used to be able to lose no drop items in world containers by closing them. Now, I believe they put no drop items on your cursor if you back away, and the close box is greyed out.

I have always farmed extra threads just in case I fail. I think for each one I did (3 8th so far), I farmed over 100 threads each. The RNG will never fail to frustrate. Good Luck.

Yeah, mine was an old-school mistake when you could still close fixed containers with no drop items inside.

I'm working on this shawl as well with only the trip to Velks remaining. My question; is it smart for me to try Velks solo (for the shawl related items) since I've never been there? I read some things that make me think that I really should take somebody with Velks experience the first time to show me the ropes.

I've read posts advising to change from Run to Walk in order to better traverse the "slippery" paths.

I'm sure this has been discussed elsewhere, I just failed to find it.

I don't think Velks at 60 will be a problem for you

Just go in and run around - the higher you go, the more cautious you should be (ie. the slower you should move) but you'll soon figure out where the icy parts are.

You only need the crystalline (semi-translucent) spiders.

Made my first foray into Velks last night, and it was... interesting. There was a group of 65's near the entrance PL'ing a couple of guildies and the mob bodies were stacking up like cord wood. I started a conversation with one of the "bored" 65's, told him why I was there, and he said to loot away. Woot!

He asked if I'd keep a damage shield on the tank, and of course I said "Sure". I don't know how or why, but something summoned me, I dropped down a couple of levels, and I got my fanny waxed in about 2 seconds.

The 65's were really nice about it (they didn't even know I died); I /consented the leader at his request, got a max rez, KEI and was back in business is about 2 minutes.

I ended up with 35 of the Threads and 6 backpacks full of Velium bricks and Gems. I'd have gladly eaten a death for that kind of haul

Nairn - woot! Sounds like fun =)

My first 5th shawl, I miscalculated the other way and had like 30 threads too many or something. My math sucks.

When I did it again, I had a blast running around Velks and falling off things, but then I was sort of insane at the time. (Guess I still am - HEEHEE!).
