  • Sonic Wolf Bane Lowdown - Partial Guide to Spawn Points

For the past month I have been hunting the Moor to complete the Sonic Wolf Bane quest for my Beastlord, using alts for the other crafted components. I have come to know the areas of the sonic wolves and the owlbears quite well. here is what I have learned, and I hope someone will find it usefull:

Owlbears - The components that drop from the owlbears will only drop off Owlbear Cubs, Owlbear Grapplers and Owlbear Razorbeaks. Also, they will only drop off those mobs that spawn outside of the caves, not from the ones within. There are two, and ONLY two, spawn points outside the caves that I have found and they operate on approximately a 5 minute timer. One spawn point, which has for me only spawned Cubs, is on/around the small hill that over looks the Vah Shir outpost. The other is a random point in the valley outside the Owlbear cave entrance. Sometimes the spawn is up in the grey area on the north side and sometimes it's on the greensward on the southern end. These are the only two that I have found in the month that I have been hunting here. Owlbear Guts and Fatty Owlbear Meat look like a common drop, as I've seen either one on almost every single kill, regardless of mob type. Owlbear Tendons I'd rank at uncommon to rare, but they are not as rare as Small Owlbear Claws, which are quite rare. I was only farming the bears to get my Beastlord two of the small claws and that took me a month of about 3 hours each night. Maybe I'm really unlucky, but that' your call.

Sonic Wolves - Sonic Wolves are a pain in the neck, and I will not be sad to see them for the last time. Thankfully at 46 the ones I am hunting are all green and fall quite easily to my strength. The spawns that drop components are Sonic Wolflings, Sonic Pups and Sonic Wolves. NOTE: There are two diffrent versions of Sonic Wolves. There are those that spawn INSIDE the cave, and those that spawn OUTSIDE the cave. They look the same and have the same name, but do not have the same loot table. As with the Owlbears, only the ones that spawn OUTSIDE the caves will ever have a chance of dropping the components for the quest. The only way you can tell if the Sonic Wolf that you are fighting is one that spawned outside the cave is to look at the location you found it in. The wolves that spawn in the caves leave to patrol the outside of the cave only for a short distance. If the wolf you are stalking is headed back in the direction of the cave, then you are better off not wasting your time. The Pups, Wolflings and Wolves that drop the components all spawn on and around the island between the two bridges. There are approximately 3 spawn points on the island itself, while a random one puts one of the mobs somewhere around the shores surrounding the north end of the island (I've encountered spawns on both the East and West sides of the island's tip) and another random spawn puts one on the Eastern river near the south end of the island where it empties into the bigger body of water. That spawn can wander onto the Eastern side of the river I have seen.

Now, about the island itself and the three spawn points. One, which spawns Wolfings and Pups, is in the small cluster of trees and stumps in the Northwestern area of the island. It can wander up the hill towards the center sometimes, but that's the general area. Second spawn in next to the road in the central area of the island, on the Eastern facing slope. This is also a spawn point for Curfang, though he is a bit of a rare spawn. Third spawn point is on the southern end of the island, in the flat area of green before the land slopes down to the water. The wolf spawns are harders for me to time since there are more of them than there are of the Owlbears, but I think the Sonic Wolves are on a longer timer. They tend to wander more than the Owlbears, which makes them even more of a pain to track down. The Wolves have a lot more drops than the Owlbears, which makes the hunt last longer as they may drop something that you don't need anymore. I'm not done farming the Wolves yet, so as this next month-long hunting trip goes on I will try to post additional infromation that I happen to gather. Until then, good luck!

P.S. Finally, after many moons and many more platinum I am ble to make all of the pieces for the Sonic Wolf Bane quest. So if you are on the Tunare server and looking for one or more of them, give Kikyn a /tell and I'll see what I can do. I'll provide them on a case-by-case basis.

EDIT: Changed the Curfang remark and the PS.

2nd EDIT: Changed PS again for final time.

Thanks for the info there. I've been trying to get my rogue sonic wolf tongues to even GET to the wolf bane part for TEN HOURS now. TEN!! Ugh. Two out of six tongues. hehe

You are welcome Getting the tongues to drop can be frustrating, believe me I know. But it can be done, and you can in fact get all 10 in one night. You just have to have a keen eye, a good fix on the spawn areas(since the spawns don't just happen on one fixed spot, they can be in a small area) and levitation helps ALOT. It's also much easier if you can solo the war, just in case someone started it and left it in progress. Nothing worse then having to stop because the wolves get slaughtered.

A couple of points that may help the farmers coming from someone who has the Officer's Cloak of Service on all five Vah Shir classes.

In my experience the Powdered Wolf Claws are the rarest item you will need but the Sonic Wolf Blood is the most frustrating since it is barely more common than the claws and you need three of them per weapon.

The Patrolling Owlbears that spawn on the southern islands can drop Owlbear Tendons, Digested Salass Moss and Digested Nightpalm. They may drop the Owlbear Bile too but I never saw it and found it an uncommon drop from the cub spawn near the Vah Shir outpost. Much easier to get there than on the islands.

The Sonic Hunters that spawn on the islands can drop the Sonic Wolf Tendons but I did not see any other relevant drops from them. I may have just been unlucky due to the rarity of drops but I wouldn't waste my time hunting anything but the tendons from them. The tendons are more common from the wanderers in the eastern section than here but it is another option if the wolves are not home.

The Grimlings are a pain to farm just like the others. They will run at low health and can be very fast. They are social if you are still getting XP from them. Wait until you have SoW or root/snare before hunting them.

The Grimling Fishermen and the Grimling Chieftain drop the Fish Oil Soaked Rags. The fishermen are easy find and repop relatively fast. The rags shouldn't present a problem.

The Bag of White Sand can drop from any melee type grimling including the Chieftain. It is a little rarer than the rags but not bad. They can be a little tougher to single pull but shouldn't be too hard to get with a little patience or high levels.

The Blackened Salt Crystals, Poison Dart Felt and the Ashes of Dark Rituals only drop from the casters. They generally spawn well inside the camps and are hard to get single until high levels. They are mostly priest or shaman type casters so expect dots and dispels. Annoying but not extremely dangerous. These three items are rare but not near as rare as some of the items you need from the wolves. The best place I have found for pulling them if they are not yet green is the southeastern-most island. There are two spawnpoints there that produce casters and there are few others on the island so it can be broken by a single group fairly easily.

The Tortise Saliva and Kelp Salts drop from the turtles on the islands. The turtles are pretty weak but do have an unpleasant poison DoT that can be frustrating if you're not expecting it. The saliva and salts are uncommon drops but an hour hunting should get you enough to get by. You might want to get these while you are getting the Bags of White Sand since the Grimling Herders near the turtles can drop them.

The Crystallized Ygri Root is a ground Spawn in the Sonic Wolf area. There are at least three spots where it spawns. One north of the east cave, one southwest of the cave and one on the hill east of the eastern bridge.

The Porous Ore is also a ground spawn about midway down the western branch of the river. There is another spawn on the hill west of the river but it can be hard to find with the terrain there.

The Black Silt Clay is the easiest ground spawn to find. It spawns in many places on the islands. There is another spawn there for the progressive brewing quest too. The spawns near the water's edge are the ones you are looking for. The spawns under the trees are the ones for the brewing quest.

Once you finish with your weapon there are three more items that you will need from Hollowshade Moor.

The Grimling Chieftain Staff drops from the casters in the southern camp near the Chieftain. They are not easy to single pull at the level you can get experience from them but the camp isn't too bad for loot and the Chieftain has some nice drops so getting a group together isn't too bad. It is a rare drop though. You can combine this with farming some of the other items from the grimling casters since anything that can drop the staff can also drop the other caster items.

The Owlbear Guardian Talon is a rare drop from any Owlbear above a grappler. That means Razorbeaks, Fleshrenders and the named ones. I don't recommend farming the named since killing them starts the war and things become difficult with the war running. I usually just start pulling Fleshrenders out of the cave and get the drop in under 30 minutes.

The Sonic Wolf Guardian Fang is the worst of the three. I have seen it drop from common wolves pulled from the east cave but it is extremely rare. You have a much better chance of it dropping from the 2 Sonic Guardians that spawn right outside the cave. Ghowlik can also drop the fang but I don't recommend farming him for it since killing him, starts the war and makes hunting certain items a serious pain. Expect to spend a couple of hours on this one unless you get lucky.

As far as the tradeskills are concerned all five parts trivial around 135 skill but seem easy to make. My characters are below trivial in skill but I haven't seen many failures. I may have just been lucky though.

Hope this helps and good luck with the quest. The cloak is well worth the work.

Thank you. I'm doing most all the farming with my main, 65 bard, since he can track. Then I have a 60 shaman, 30 beastlord, 29 warrior, and 13 rogue. I also have a level 5 berserker but stopped leveling when I completed his generic newbie quest and found it's not connected it with any of the other lore in Shar Vahl. I'm TERRIFIED running around Hollowshade to loot a corpse with that rogue, but at least he has sneak + hide.

Very nice info, thank you. I must be unlucky with the tongues. I got two tongues, a for a part BEFORE wolfbane, in the same time I got three blood and like four powdered claws. o_O

I actually got the rogue part for my friend the way it was intended. I traded a shaman part for it with another Vah Shir. I do want to do all five alts some time though. I like the quest, and Shar Vahl/Vah Shir in general.
