8th Shawl question

I'm on the 8th shawl and I have a question about the Dain.

The posts say that unless you want to pop the Dain twice you should follow a certain path. I've completed 6 of the 8 pieces of armor but haven't 'etched' any of it yet(i have all but the 3 unrefined sapphire gems). The post says to make the armor first then pop the Dain and run to the other npc's to get the orders and issue kit. Combine the armor and show the Dain. My question is that I don't have the etching tools yet and it seems to be a step after i pop the dain. What if I fail on the combines? Is there a way to get the etching tools before I pop the Dain?

You can get the etching tools from Meg Tucker at any time. You don't need to wait until you spawn Dain.
