  • Snow Griffon Hunting and Other Mobs

I started the 3rd shawl hunting last night with a few friends and had a blast of a time in Eastern Wastes. No eggs yet; all four of us are hunting them for the shawls, so it will be a while before we all have enough.

I did some searching in the archives about hunting locations and for the most part people have suggested simply having a tracker and mucking about as you find the griffons. But almost no one has mentioned hunting from particular locations. We were hunting from two locations, the Bridge and the Sleeper, and I'm curious if others have done similarly.

We sat for a while at the bridge and pulled to there. This seemed to work well, with only the occasional wanderer adding in. Not a lot of griffons on track at that point though, so we moved. We spent some time pulling to the Sleeper's Tomb, a little away from the guards. This got a little ugly. About the time we were getting ready to call it a night, I got jumped by a screaming red manticore. Our second tank made the abandon ship call, stole agro away from me with my DogDog (my main is a shaman), and valiantly sacrificed himself. With no map of the area (shame on me for not checking this when we zoned in) it was a little festive trying to run for the zone line. I should mention that we all stay within close LDoN grouping range and my shaman is midway through lvl37.

I asked my friends if this was normally what it was like and they enthusiastically said yes. I did indeed have a good time, though without getting any eggs, so I guess my questions are these: does anyone have favorite hunting spots or do people really just wander about until they find the griffons? Are the manticores really that much of an undercon? I made it to the bridge with about 25% health (but I lived!).

If you have a friend with the shawl already you can MQ past the baking requirement if you find the camp unreasonable. Just a thought.

We're still having fun and exploring. Two of the four of us playing from last night are end-game players on other servers. I suspect they get a kick out of playing Tour Guide for me and my husband. My husband and I have only been playing since Sept 2003, so we're still young, naive, and impressionable.

And frankly I'm having a blast, so I don't mind the camping of mobs even if it means I'll have to spend more months in Eastern Wastes and such. I've heard about people MQ'ing the baking portion but none of the people I know on the server have their seal. Since I'm still having a blast, I figure the camping is all part of the fun.

Snow bunnies and Manticores are the place holders. Make Sleepers Tomb your base of operations. Best to have as many trackers as you can get as the Snow Griffons spawn all over the zone.

Good luck and have fun .

bard guildie went to sleepers. trained everything in sight and we tried to kill it all. killed 5-7 and got 2 eggs in about 2 hours. lv 65's with free time are handy.

Basing at Sleeper's Tomb is good as there are a couple of spawn spots of griffs near the edge of vision (100 clipping plane). As well, there is a spawn that I hardly see touched a little bit East of the ramp to Kael Drakkel. GL to you!

When I was doing the shawl, I generally hunted near the IC bridge. I found 2-3 griffon spawn points around there and just kept killing them. A friend of mine came to help one day and he said that he got most of his eggs from wandering around near the Ry'gorr fort.

                Heh

I was begging for hours for friends to help me kill griffs for the eggs. I am only 37 Pally - my 58 Enc thinks im nuts soloing FGs and running around EW annyhooo - i hooked up with a very nice 58 gnome trying his shawl question. After spawning oh so many FG DS we decided to go for the eggs i still needed - he used his bard to kite - 4-5 hours later and 1 egg (I was over the moon at the time) I was defeated........

I gotta go to bed - group message (/cry)

Boom Griff in front of me - Help (lol)

                Oh k one more - gm (/woohoo)

Tracking Boom another Griff to the left of me HELP (rotflmao)

On my way - gm (/nervous)

After 2 min kiting - BAM 2 more eggs

Nice way to go to bed

                Keep at it

As to where - we found most around the sleeper - the last two between the sleeper and the iceclad(?). The manticores suck full stop - yes they are bad - undercon - red to me and will be till i come back at 65 to teach them a thing or two. I am not looking forward to the spider silks though - heard that one is worse

It took me about 8 hours to get the eggs I needed. I got all but one within the last 45 minutes.

I hunted in the area between the IC bridge and sleeprs tomb (closer to the tomb most of the time) The reason it took so long was that I was killing the wrong things. I figured the Griffs were a semi-large mob so I was killing rhino's, mammoths, and maniticore's (snow bunnies too just for fun). I saw 2 griff's in 7 hours (one egg).

I was about to leave and decided to destroy a couple dervishes and snow cougars that had wadered by. Boom! Griff nearby.

Hmmm......Pulled a couple more dervishes and cougars. Another Griffon. By killing just the dervs and cougars, I spawned 7 snow griffons in less than 1 hour. I don't know if it is one or both that share the spawn table with the snow griffons.

                  Try it, you'll like it.

got the 4 eggs for a bud last night. my thoughts: kill everything that isn't coldain. that should spawn it no matter what it is. i quadded wollies, tundra mammoths, wolves, dervishes, giants, everything that move was free game. worked pretty well. i just wish the eggs dropped more often. killing 12 griffons without egg makes me want to .

The person asking the question is not able to wipe the entire area. They were in the high 30's so a strategy will work better than trying to kill everything in sight.

Yep, that would be me. We haven't had a chance to go back to Eastern Wastes recently (two real-life back injuries among two of our group have kept us away). It seems so far that everyone has different ideas about what the griffon placeholders are. I've had some people suggest killing tons of snow bunnies too. For the most part our group of 4 (high 30's, Shadow Knight, Palladin, Shaman, Rogue) focused on white cons of any flavor that our puller managed to drag in. We weren't particular about what they were that I remember (but I'm just the Shaman).

Realistically speaking, *is* there a stragtegy that works or is it just more random? It seems pretty random to me, honestly. So far, most people have suggested that most of the spawn points are between the Tomb and the Bridge. That seems to mesh so far with my single experience and the other guys' experience. But for the placeholders, I'm not so sure. Maybe that's because I don't understand spawn tables enough.

running from bridge to sleepers tomb i saw at least 7 up the day i got my 4th egg. no idea.

they can't clear the area but they are having fun and getting xp. what's wrong with them trying. recommend anow bunnies, snow cougars, snow dervishes, wooly mamoths, dire wolves, frost giant scouts, rhinos, frost giant savages, tundra mammoths, manticore in that order. just becuase when quadding that seems to be the hp order. i hate manticores so they are higher on list hehe.

snow bunnies might not spawn one but as easy as they are to wack why not? base at sleepers tomb. have seen 3 up there at once. same spots can spawn woolies, frost giants, rhinos at least. not sure what else popped there.
