Aid Gimel Failure Question

I am about to start this quest and I wondered if a combine failure that used an item from a previous quest resulted in the return of that item (like the coldain shawl). Specifically, on the brewing combine it uses the leather signit from the smithing quest. If I fail the brewing, do I have to do the smithing again or is the signet returned on failure? I checked the recipies and no success or failure information is provided.

The signet is returned on fails so you only have to do each step twice if you intend to have 2 earrings.
