Giant Field Rat Whiskers

I've started a half-elf ranger so I have a character that's got tracking and I've been trying to do the newbie armour quests from Surefall Glade.
The problem I've got is trying to find Giant Field Rat Whiskers - I need 8 of the danged things and my grand total count so far is zilch

Giant Field rats I can find no problem and I chase them from one side of Qeynos Hills to the other - I've seen every sort of drop appear - but no whiskers - and I must have killed dozens of the little rodents by now.

Has anyone else spotted these recently or have they vanished in all the patches we've had over the past few months ?

I did this quest and got ALL my armor too.
It took me about 80 or so rats to get all the whiskers.

IMPORTANT FOR QUEST

I found on the bertox server that it is impossible to get giant field rat whiskers unless you loot them and put them directly into the kit you were given. If you store them in anything else when you loot them they will change from Giant Field Rat Whiskers to Giant Rat Whiskers...it a big enough difference to keep you from making your armor and those darn whiskers are hard to get.
