best use of time for hits is probably Coldain ring #4. Just keep saving Tain Hammerfrost over and over again. As long as he survives you can keep triggering the event & everytime you hand the froven elixer to him he gives a +dain hit.Master Artisan Kahmon

Do this quest here to get some fast and easy Dain Frostreaver IV faction - all it takes is a stack or two of small peices of velium - of course, with the increased demand thanks to the new quest, that means this faction is going to have an opportunity cost of 1k per stack for you, but hey, it is the 8th shawl.
(So how'd you get max KOS anyway - one too many Dain Frostreaver IV raids?)
No more EQ for me till they fix the crash bug.

have a bud who can trigger the dain for you? i know the guy before the dain can approve your shawl. the friend makes the armor to trigger the walk and you do the turn in to the avatar. need a big firend to do this though. also tormax is the biggest hit for yelli and dain of anything i have heard. doing kael for cov faction here.

Hello there =)
Boyfriend and I are allied with the Dain just by camping at Tormax's place. There are a handful of mobs that spawn there that give Dain (and Yeli) faction. Tormax's guards and a few other named. Everything is on different spawn timers (arch guards, wolves, guys in the palace itself, his guards...) and the ones in the palace take a while to pop. Not sure exactly, I leave that kind of knowledge up to my boyfriend, but I believe the guys in the palace are every hour or so, whereas the wolves and arch guards are every half. Something like that.
When I did the quest, I was dubious. We camped Tormax's area for about 2 and a half weeks (trying to get a enchanted torn silk robe for the Oracle quest).
The other suggestions are probably better =) But Tormax's area isn't horrible experience, and can be done with just a few people.
Good luck!

(As a level 60 moderately equipped cleric)
I took one negative Dain hit accidently a long time ago and it brought me to scowl. The guild I was in at the time never killed Tormax because they could never find it up during their raid times, so I tried to fix the faction solo.
I did a combination of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd shawls. The first and second shawls take a long time compared to some other options, so I stopped doing those after a while.
The third shawl has a lot of mini-steps that all give a little Dain faction. I personally liked the Kodiak sandwhich step the best. I found a nice spot where kodiaks roamed near CC, and I just kept killing them for the meat. I brought the other ingredients and a spit with me and made the sandwiches while I medded up / waited for respawn. The other recipes (Snow Griffin souffle, Ulthork Meat Pie, and Snow Bunny Stew) work as well, but I wasn't able to kill snow griffins and ulthorks efficiently at the time...and snow bunnies were too cute to kill.
While doing this, I got several HQ Tundra Kodiak pelts, which are used in the 1st Coldain ring quest. You can do this as well for a faction hit, or you can sell them in the bazaar for a nice profit.
After I used up all my ingredients, I would head into CC and farm some velium bits to do the first part of the Velium Focus quest. I stopped after I turned in the focus to Phenocryst in Wakening Lands. I didn't bother doing the rest of the quest to see if I got anymore Dain hits...it seemed too time consuming for something I would end up destroying. Another positive aspect of doing this is raising faction with the geonoids, which you'll be killing for the 8th shawl. It's a lot easier to just run through the caves and kill the shimmering geonids on patch days / zone resets than to clear to each of them.
After going back to Thurgadin, I did all my turn-ins. The kodiak sandwich step gives 2 faction hits per sandwich. First hit is giving the sandwich to Guard Leif, the second one is giving the Used Napkin to Mordin. While I was in Thurgadin, I did the parts of the Velium Focus quest that involved Thurgadin.
I spent about two weeks doing this, and I went from scowl to glare, but it was extremely tedious and time consuming. I eventually ended up "camping" Tormax and finding out his time of death so I could get the faction hits. It took me two faction hits and all that questing to get enough faction for the quest. First Tormax hit kept me at glare, second one brought me up to amiably (might be a little off, it's been a while).
I hope this helps, good luck.

I have never had a dain faction hit and I am dubious by default so you can do the turn ins on dubius. If you are doing the velium buits remember that small bricks can be chissled to make 2 small pieces. Crystal Cavers is the best place to get the velium. Only the miners drop it but lately it's been a highly camped spot cause of the new smithing skill up route.

Actually, CC is not the best place to go for velium.
I was in what i call a powerlevel group in Velketors Lab ledge today.
Me (65 ranger 175aa), my 65 shaman (5aa) a 65 monk and his 50ish shaman, a friends 50ish ranger and another 50ish paladin.
Monk would pull about... oh.. 4 to 8 mobs. Wed slaughter them with little healing needed, and when we were down to the last one, monk would pull a fresh batch.
After breaking down bricks/blocks, I ended up with about 6 stacks of velium pieces in about 2 hours.
