I'm kos to coldain, and just got to this point in the quest....

. the hammer needed is dropable. so you can ask a friend to find it
. velium and coldain velium tremper are bought in thurg but are tradable too, so, a mule can buy them for you
etching tools are nodrop. they are given by a merchand but i have no idea is it work if you're kos. you should try (go there invis, try, and re-invis after)Exarch Saphir, Bloods and Guts, Torvo

This question was posed someplace in the 38 page main Aid Grimel Quest discussion. One person responded that because it is a merchant you get them from your faction with them can not drop below Dubious. Therefore you could just invis you way to Meg and say "What Etching Tools" to get them.
As a long time ally to the coldain I was not able to confirm this, but I do not recall anyone disputing it on the thread.Master Artisan Kahmon

Heres what I tried,..
1) She doesnt sell the etching tools. If theyre sold, its by a different merchant.
2) Being a rogue, I can make myself indifferent to her, which still gives me the ' you must prove yourself ' message meaning I dont have the faction.
3) Got into Dwarf illusion, no change in faction.
4) Tried using Puppet Strings on her to charm her, but she is uncharmable.
So...can anyone confirm any other route of getting the etching tools?Comment

Meg doesn't SELL the etching tools, she gives them to you when you say the phrase to her. "I need a set of etching tools" is what I have written down on my cheat sheet. Try saying that to her while invis, or pop out of invis and say it then invis again and see what happens.

One thing I learned doing this part of the quest is that vendors are never kos...dubious is as far as they go. All you have to do is invis to her room, move away from the door a bit, and ask her for them (still cant buy anything from her though).Comment

Keep in mind that NPCs will not respond if you are Invis or hidden, so you must reveal yourself before speaking.Master Artisan Kahmon

You dont get it.
Uninvis, I am dubious. Say the phrase while dubious she threatens to kick my ass.
Sneaking from behind makes me indifferent, but NOT invisible. Say the phrase from behind while indifferent says I must prove myself more before she will help.
Has anyone who is not amiable or better been able to say the phrase and get the etching tools?
I'm thinking its not possible...but if I do find a way, i'll post it here. I even pickpocketed her for awhile and didnt get anything from her.Comment

Technically, you can pickpocket any NPC that the etching tools are not part of their loot table.
But a non-smart-ass answer would be, I even went as far as pickpocketing just because I was desperate and didnt get anything. How am I supposed to know the loot table of a random green dwarf merchant in thurg?Comment

Yes you can pickpocket merchants. But, the purchasable items are not on the "loot table" and therefore cannot be picked. Only loot table items can be picked. And thats a seperate list from quest items that are given out as well, so technically NPCs can have 3 different types of loot.Comment

Are you getting that response when you ask her about the bar of pure enchanted velium, when you ask for the etching tools, or both? At kindly when I asked about the bar she told me I hadn't proven myself. But then I asked for the tools and she gave them to me. If she's telling you that when you ask about the bar, just try asking for the tools anyways. If she's saying it for both, I dunno.
