5th shawl combine failure question

I am looking for some definite clarification on wether the 4th shawl is returned on failure of 5th combine. I have heard many people have lost the shawl and had to start over. I was reading through the quest walkthrough here and it said that the previous shawl is always returned on failure. So which is it?

I am not looking forward to working tailoring up much higher than trivial unless absolutely necessary. I am already at the trivial of 115 but I would want to put some space between that trivial to increase chance of success. Unless of course I don't lose all previous work.

If you fail shawl 5, you do keep your shawl 4.

If you fail shawl 6, you do keep your shawl 5.

If you fail shawl 7, you do keep your shawl 6.

I've failed shawl 5 and 6 twice each.

Another good hint is to have a geerlock on you when you do the combine and have a chanter cast a dexterity buff on you like boon, the added dexterity increases your chance of success. I did my 5th shawl with tailoring at 134 I believe. Sal

Dex has zero effect on success rate. Geerlock definitely a good idea though.
