  • 8th shawl smithing

How high should I get my smithing for the 8th shawl? I know there are trivials around 187. I am only raising smithing for the shawl quest. It's at 132 now. Should I raise it some more or make a stab at some combines knowing I'll probably fail (i.e. gather more ingredients)

    What's reasonable?

    Thanks!

I would take it to 188 in smithing for the 8th shawl, I would be really bummed out if I failed on a combine for the 8th shawl since some of the materials for it are hard to get, namely veilum wolf pelts

I've made 2 full suits of armor, only failed on 1 combine for greaves (so succeed 2/3 tries on greaves) with a smithing skill of 165. my heart was pounding each time i made a bp or greaves (since those require the highest smithing skill) but I came out okay. I hate blacksmithing so wasn't going to wait till 188 hehe. Just make sure you use a geerlok.

Ok...think I'll raise it to when fine plate visors trivial, at 163. =) I think that's all I can take of smithing! LOL

I'll be sure to equip the geerlock.

        Thanks for the suggestions.

My Troll SK did it with a 186 smithing (I hell leveled at that point and ran out of plat and patience) - no fails with a geerlok and 230ish INT.

Surprising but here's what I did:

I ended up giving the armor a try anyhow with 136 Smithing. I equipped a geerlock. I made the chestplate on my first try. Greaves on my third. I failed once on the vambraces. And once on one of the bracers. For every other piece I succeeded on my first try.

I also got 4 skill ups. Probably not the ideal way to do it but I think in the long run it was cheaper since all the velium I used I either farmed myself or got from a guildmate.

Grats on getting the pieces made!

For future reference, if people only want to get to 188, then you can profit while making LDoN chain and selling back to vendors (tempers can be a pain, but if you're not planning to smith any further, no need to save them for post-188 smithing), and that will put people's smithing into the 160's I think. A few people have reported in here coming out a few hundred pp ahead after skilling up and sellback on LDoN chain; I don't know from personal experience.

Thanks Myrron; was just looking at the LDON smithing recipes tonight. BTW, it was your smithing guide and your tailoring guide that got me through so I owe you a huge thank you! Your guides are an excellent resource and I'm sure they've helped a lot of people. I know they helped me immensly.
