I currently have a 229 skill and have done 60 Ruby Steins 40 Golden idol of Tunares and 40 White bands and have yet to get a skill up. I am at 270 wis. Is there somthing better to skillup off of at this skill level?
The odds of that happening are pretty low... but not as bad as you'd think... and it happens to most of us at one time or another.
In fact, even with an intelligence 35-45 points higher, I had two post-200 runs near there before skilling up (88 and 99). The odds of going 100 combines without skill up at about 306 int are somewhere between 1 in 50 and 1 in 75. Low, but when you're doing hundreds of points of skill ups, you're going to see them from time to time.
Don't get discouraged, just try to remember that every new attempt has a very low chance of resulting in a skill up, and no matter how many attempts you do, you don't get "entitled" to a point. Try to get in the state of mind where you're happy to get a point ever, and keep clicking on.
And I find that charting all of my skill ups really puts things in perspective. I tend to forget how many points I got from 5 or fewer combines, until I look at my sheets.
Unless your bank box is overflowing with coins, and I don’t mean coppers, then I too would recommend making some crucibles of escape. They are fairly inexpensive, relatively speaking, but best of all they are a change of pace. Head out to the Gorge of King Xorbb and start beating on the muddites. I took my spirit puppy there last night out of boredom and cleaned the place out. The zone is only levels 8 to 30; so depending on your level it can be very easy. And, at least on my sever, its hardly ever camped. I’ve been the only person in the zone every time but once in the seven or so times I’ve hunted there. The heavy clay, which weighs very little by the way and is stackable, is somewhat a rare drop. I’d guess I gathered about 10 per hour of mudshed.
Farming can be a pain, but in this case it might be a nice change of pace over spending hundreds and hundreds of plats with nothing but frustration to show for it. You now have the opportunity to vent that frustration on every muddite you can find.

Don't worry it's not just you. 200 combines the other night and only 2 skill ups. But that isn't as bad and the baking RNG. 300 combines and 1 skill up.
Like anything else it is erratic. At some points I went 4-5 stacks for 0 skill and on a few occastions I would get 2 skill from 1 stack. On just one occasion I got 3 skill one stack during the 200's.

Yep, its very irratic. I had times during my pottery GM'ing that I would get 2 skill ups in 2 attempts, then go 100+ with none, ~148 being my longest streak of no skill ups.
But then I've had these babies:

Later that night I went 137 attempts at Fine Steel BP's and didn't fail a single one, streak only ended cause I hit 188 skill and didn't make more.
