  • Skillups from a quest recipe?

    Greetings, all.

I was reading the quest description and the board posts for the Loyalist Shield of Honor quest. Full details here:

    http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/quest.html?quest=1582

What interested me was one of the later steps in the quest.

Lathin Firetree says 'Phenic wishes me to summon the Shade that is the owner of this belt for questioning. That is quite a dangerous request but it is not uncommon of Phenic to be a risk taker when it comes to his plots against the Coterie of the Eternal Night. Take this sketch and find a skilled potter to craft you a likeness of a shade from a large block of clay as a focus item for the ritual. When you have the unfired figurine fire it in a kiln with this special glaze on a High Quality Firing Sheet and return to me.'
The interesting thing about this combine is that if you fail, you get the sketch back. The wheel combine is reported as not trivial at 250 skill; the kiln combine is reported as trivial at 50 skill.

My question is whether this could be a viable skill-up route to 250? Granted, there are some nasty battles involved in the quest before you can get the sketch, and you do lose the sketch on success; but I suppose if you're of high enough level, the battles needed to get a new sketch could be easier than some of the other skillup paths to 250 pottery.

    Thoughts? Comments?

I was originally going to try this too, but my friend and I sortof got distracted; remember though that doing this is unlikely to be that effective because as soon as you SUCCEED you lose the sketch, which means no more skillups. I'd wager that at any skill level where this would be worth doing, you'd get no more than 25 combines out of it before you "accidentally" succeeded.

When my enchanter (created just to keep my potter supplied) finally did her Earring of the Solstice combine (in a Kiln) she got the following:
...You got better at Smithing (1)

Who knew one could skill up on a no fail combine? /grin

There's a step in the Vah Shir bard citizenship quest like this too, and you can go get another sketch when you succeed. Unfortunately, the trivial is only in the 90s, and once you start to lose the sketch a lot it gets tedious running back for a new one. Nice for super cheap skill ups though, only a few silver per combine.

Hehe, there are some no fail combines that are trivial higher than 0. Silk swatches, silk thread, newbie armor, etc. Just because it can't fail doesan't mean that you can't get a skillup in it, hehe.

Be interesting to find out what the trvial is on the POTC combine, hehe. Know it's at least 1. I can also tell you that when I did the combine at 26 smithing I got a trivial meassage. So triv is between 1 to 26. Doubt there's anyone with the time and money to figure this out that actually cares though, hehe.
