Finally hit 250 today after a couple of months of frustration (starting at 200 that is). I knew I wasn't going to enjoy the high end of pottery, so I thought I'd record my findings for those who like to see the effects of the pottery changes that went in a while back.
Going from skill 200 to 250 took me 1946 recorded combines (plus a dozen or so focus items unrecorded), and cost me a grand total of 99,480pp (before resale of star ruby steins at 30pp each and 1/3 success rate).
Longest run without a skillup was 131, and fastest was 1 (ie. 2 in a row).
I did:
1000 Star Ruby Steins at roughly 72pp each
443 old Tunare Idol things at roughly 45pp each (buying mana vials at 30pp each).
503 Planar Steins at about 15pp each.
Average was 39 combines per skillup, although i can tell you it reeeeeeeally didnt feel that easy.
For those that like this kind of thing, here is my complete list of tries per point:

And there it is. 232 to 240 seemed to whip past, and i got them all on the same day, which was a huge boost to my flagging morale, as ealier on it had been a struggle to get tgether enough materials to manage 1 point a day.
I was toying with the idea of doing the cheaper Tunare Idols until 250, but I'm not an enchanter, and the sheer number of mana vials needed made it entirely unfeasible to someone who cant produce them themselves. Finding the vials in the bazaar at a reasonable price is stupidly hard, and I found one vendor who did them at 30pp each (cheapest - thanks Kakasha), with the rest being often 100pp per vial, which I can't afford to pay. Unfortunately, I was using them faster than she could produce them hehe.
So I went with the more expensive Star Ruby Steins, which do at least have some resale value. I have yet to sell out the 100 or so I have left on my poor holding mule, so I'm gonna go ut later and treat myself to something frivolous with the spoils!
Do remember that although you can get back just under half your money on the raw stein cost, you will be failing maybe 3 out of 4 combines to begin with, and in the end I was still only getting about a 40% success rate in the 240 skill range.
Apart from the cost, the thing that made Pottery an absolute pig to do is the availability of materials to non enchanters (and even the enchanters have to spend time enchanting the bits).
From doing pottery below 200 before the changes (and below 200 after the changes too on my monk - 201 skill rar) I have to say I have notcied a difference in difficulty, and yes it has gotten harder. To those still on the road to 250, I wish encouragment, and the will to persevere where others have fallen by the wayside. It may take a while to finally get there, but get there you will.
In closing, 250 potter for hire! I'm broke!
