  • Iron Oxide

Hi. I have read these Boards for years and finally registered. Although I play on Rallos Zek, I have spent a considerable amount of time on tradeskills, with my highest being Tailoring at 199. Over the years I have accumulated about 15 stacks (yes, 15 stacks) of Iron Oxide. A long time ago I parked an alt in Steamfont and just got into the habit of looting the groundspawns. I also have about 10 stacks of Brownie Meat).

Anyway, I have a skill of 130 in Pottery....and I have my 6th shawl. I want to raise Pottery to 190 or so to increase my chance of success on the 7th shawl. I plan to buy GoD and get Crows Special Brew to do vials, but my question involves Divine Crystaline Glaze.

Just how many Iron Oxides will I need to skill-up beyond 200? The Permafrost Crystals are also a pain - I have 2 stacks of those. Should I sell some?

Thanks for listening to this long winded question.

Well, what do you intend to make past 200? Figure that out, figure approximately 20-30 combines per skill up (I'd figure high if it was a question of selling off excess) and you have a good guess Thats 75 stacks if my math is right and you need the glaze all the way. There are other options out there though so figure out your skill up path first and then do the math.

If you are just skilling up, make the unfired old world idols and drop them... they really have no resale value and are the cheapest combines available at that skill level... If you post what you intend to use to skill up, I'll help you with info as much as possible

I agree with the posters. You skill up on unfired items on the pottery. The fired part has very low trivial and not worth it. The only reason why you would need IO is if you want to fire them up and sell them. In that case, I would save them for things like Golden Idol of xxxxx. Those need IO to fire up if I remember right. I think there are some other high end Pottery that needs it firing process so use them. Wow, 15 stacks, I don't think I can go through all of that. I would consider selling some of them.

If you want to do pottery for the fun of making things and selling things, then you will probably want to fire and sell your Golden Idol of Tunare. This is what I did in fact. Since triv is 242, I'd suggest making from 222 to 242. Could be /shrug 20*40 =800 idols tried, perhaps 500 success needing Iron Oxide to fire.

If you want to burn through it, dont fire anything, as suggested above.

You can easily (but slowly) get the needed Permafrost crystals. 7 pop every few hours. You could choose to park a toon with invis on spot. Pick up 7 before and after your playing time. You will have 150 in 10 days this way.

If you want to balance the market, you may want to keep an even inventory of SRES and GIoT. Every GIoT needs a SRES! Though SRES is 335 trivial, you can also try these at 222 and will succeed on some. Could reduce your Iron Oxide need down to 150 or so (lower success means you will do more combines on SRES to keep a balanced inventory).

You still may want to begin (slowly) to sell off your Iron Oxide. If you sell at market price, there is every chance you can buy back at market price later if needed. Since you may use it, you dont need to lower to a silly price to unload it. Depends on whether this cash flow boost will help you get started in the 9 gift game - This all assumes that the 9 gift market still exists on your server. On mine, it is alive and still profitable. I still make SRES to sell since the margin is so nice right now!

            Wow, thanks for replies.

I guess I want to both skill-up and make useable idols and faithstones. I would like to give these to the Clerics and Shaman in my guild and then sell some as well. I am only at 130 in Pottery right now, but plan to purchase the GoD expansion so I can skill-up to 190 (?) on poison vials using Crow's. At that point I would like to start on the stones and idols.

One comment that really caught my attention: Are there static spawn points for the Permafrost Crystals, just like the Iron Oxides? If so, is there a map or a guide? I would certainly park a charactor there to farm them.

It seems like a waste not to use the Iron Oxide. If nothing else I'll make the Galze and sell on my trader what I don't use.

Thanks very much for all the responses.

Yes, there are static spawns. Here is something really nifty I saw on the Safehouse, let me see if I can do it correctly

Post these lines, exactly as they are here, in your map file called permafrost_1

              P -10.3010, -275.6353, 0.0110, 0, 0, 0, 1, GS
              P -164.0384, -308.7936, 0.0110, 0, 0, 0, 1, GS
              P -365.7925, -470.5089, -41.9577, 0, 0, 0, 1, GS
              P 11.7782, -267.8015, -27.9890, 0, 0, 0, 1, GS
              P 5.1839, -257.0354, -27.9890, 0, 0, 0, 1, GS
              P -443.0675, -271.6117, -41.9577, 0, 0, 0, 1, GS

When you zone into permafrost, you should now have GS marked on 6 spots of your map. GS stands for ground spawn and they should correspond to exactly where they spawn (you have to duck and squeeze down a tunnel to get to the final 2). If that doesn't work, or you don't have maps, I'm pretty sure those first three numbers of each lines are the loc.

They look like little red rocks with black markings and supposedly spawn every 2 hours. Just be aware that 2 of the spawns are upstairs and then the rest are down in the wolf pit so you may need to turn off your height filter for the first few runs.

The above post says 7 spawns though, and I've heard that a lot. I've never found the 7th spawn but if you do, I'd appreciate its loc

There are 7 spawns but 6 locations - im guessing you have them.

I've posted a "word map" to them before - if you can't get the map to work I'll edit in a link to my old post. (and if you look at the black marks closely they are musical notes - good for guild trivia quiz)

Ther e are eight static Crystal spawns in Permafrost

I have my pet druid bound in the empty room with the broken corner/wall leading to the Goblin Archaeologist (perfectly safe place even for low levels) and do the farm runs invis. I have have sold several hundred Golden Idols (and Faith-/Spirit-/Soulstones) paying my EQ life.

Here's a loc to one that is missing from the other list:

                      P -329.6413, -411.0771, 14.2780, 255, 0, 255, 2, GS

I still only managed to pick up 7 though.

Oh - if you want it to match the other set in size and colour, change the 255s to 0s and the 2 to a 1 for colour and size when you paste it into your map.

I regularly pick up only 7 as well with my level 23 druid who's bound in a safe spot in the pit -- 5 from the pit and 2 on the main floor (one of which is behind a door in a tiny little room). I'd love to know where number 8 is?

I will post loc sections from my maps when I get home but meanwhile (and in case I forget ):
There are 3 on the "main floor". Start with the one in the tiny room behind the door, then the one in the broken corner that leads the the goblin archaelologist. Now go on and say hi to the archaeologist (or his substitute), jump up to him on his platform, turn around and head over the bridge, follow the corridor and find the third crystal. Now just follow that corridor and drop down through a trap in the floor into the pit. And voila, you are standing over another crystal. That leaves the one near the icy way up and the three in the gnoll caves at the end of the pit. Makes a total of eight.

Wow. Thanks. 8 spawns - 3 on upper level and 5 in the wolf tunnels. The 8th (to me) is at loc 411 330 17. The word map in the previous post from Mitsune was just right.
