  • Cost Effective Skill Up Path

I'm sure that its been asked many times, but what do you reckon the best and most cost effective way of skilling up Make Poison (and thusly Apply Poison). Before everybody points me in the direction of another site, I'm interested in your own experiences, rather than a clinical list of triv's.

Being only a lvl22 Rogue, on a limited budget, who gets on at weird times for a completly random length of time I've done the GoD 'freebe' quest to get me up to skill 54, and am now plodding on with Pottery so that I can make my own vials (horrah for Crows Special).

Thing I did notice and found odd is that I gained skill ups in the GoD Poison freebee, far, far quicker than I am with the GoD Pottery freebee. In one stack I had gone from the skill of the last poison stage to the skill of the current one, but with Pottery its taking me two/three stacks for the same number of skill ups (DEX106, WIS105) - weird!

Unless you make all the vials yourself, poison making is very expensive, esp when you get at the much higher levels (>190). Other than that, some ingredients are easily farmed (Unrest comes to mind), looted items are free.

In fact, I'm at 200 and it's cheaper to spend 300PP - 350PP with the trainer than to get the ingredients at each level for the extra 5 points.

Unfortunately I don't have the time or energy right now to research for good skillup options, maybe I'll be able to do it laterl

Check the Laboratory section in The Safehouse. They might have some stuff there to help you out.

        Draggar,

I am going to be making my own vials, and currently am able to make regular vials with a good sucess rate. Lined vials are coming along nicely and I've transferred my enchanter over from another server, who is now chanting up clay - might even sell some in the bazaar for a little bit of cash.

Its not so much an issue with cost as I'm making my own vials, more that due to the times I go online, I end up having to solo alot, and at level 25, this limits what I can sensibly go after.

I'm trying to finance all of my tradeskilling with leather padding, as I seem to be able to shift more of this in the bazaar, than anything else (including sensibly priced GoD seafood). It is a bit tedious, but I tend to zip round Shadeweavers, collection payela fruit and shiving up hoppers, though I think that my current level is limiting my loot...

        Tyber,

I've had a looksie and it really seems that Make Poison is limited to level 30's and above, this is why I was asking here to see if anybody had any experiences other than this. The only thing that I did find out there is that I could fish for jellyfish to make poison, which might be a sensible alternative to expensive purchases (and would suit the times I get on )

Ovate jellyfish is a great skillup path, plus the other fishing items in Gunthak sell for about 9GP each, and your fishing will go up quickly. Bait and poles can be bought in the lighthouse, so the only issue is getting there.

Not only that, that soecific poison you don't "apply", it's a right clicky that casts a spell (much like drinking a potion) and adds a proc for a while. I actualy used that one even way beyond the 162 cap until I got into the 190s when I could make Bite of Shissar with a reasonable success rate.

While farming and making your own vials does cut down the price a lot, and advanced poison vials are only made, you still have to figure in the price of the ingredients. I can buy shissar venom sacks ofr 7PP off merchants (most poison ingredients at my level go more than that). Factoring in the costs, it's roughly 15PP a combine (amber resin, celestial suspension, advanced poison vial, shissar venom sack). Take about 20 combines per skillup (being optomistic here) that's 300PP per skillup, ding a level and spend 300PP on 5 points. I'm not saying don't work on it, when you need the poisons, make them and try to get skillups that way.

What's your skill at now? Honestly, you're at your prime for soloing, after ~30 it gets very hard, and soling without intimidation your backstab skill lags behind. While fishing, target some distant NPC and spam your imtimidation key, get that skill up, it's important!

If you do plan on soling a lot, get some clicky's, Lozi boots, Mrylokar's vambracers, JBoots, shrunken goblin earring, and some proc'ing weapons. Ikky plate is a huge help, too, even with the new discs and raised bind wound limit, I think they've added a new 'sneak attack' disc for around your level (I love the level 52 version).

and I've transferred my enchanter over from another server, who is now chanting up clay
          I think every Rogue does.

Also, remember that Make Poison is a level capped skill. You WILL reach a point that you cannot progress anymore simply due to your level. As silly as I personally think that is, it's the way of things.

Thanks for that, I got to Gunthak last night without any major problems, and started off on the fishing route. Only got about an hour online, so I only managed to do a little bit of fishing, though it did push my skill up from 97 to 101 - lol!

Looks like I'm going to be here for some time, as I only caught 2 jellyfish :s Good sell back on the eel's and other fish though, which should finance me getting my baking skill up a bit higher (fish, make butter, intimidate, etc).

Thanks for the tip on intimidate, hadn't thought of it . Is it capped at (lvl*5)+5 or ((lvl-22)*5)+5 (22 being the level you can get intimidate)???

I'm slowly saving up for some nice clickies, but am fairly strapped for cash as I spent nearly all my cash on a swiftclaw sash, mind you I've only ever once had four figures of platinum - lol.

If I remember correclty, intimidate is level capped, but it is extremely helpful while soloing (and intimidate while they're running, too).

I think fishing is also level capped.

As for cash, at 25 I had only once where I had more than 1K in cash, I was saving up to get the SCHW (2K at the time). That's a lot of bandit sashes from WK and leather paddings sold!

Cool, I'll have to get the fishing pole out again then, I stopped fishing in Gunthak when I hit what I thought was my limit - neat

Pay someone to MQ the Fisherman's Companion (http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=16653)

(The pole also summons ale). Depending on prices on your server, it shouldn't be more than a couple hundred PP (mine was 500 on the overpriced KB).

Thank you for the clarification, Elyssanda.
