Has anyone ever researched the possibility of converting non-magical jewelry into subcomponents or gems? Much like Fine Steel weapons can be broken down into HQ Blocks of Ore.

    Curious...

    It doesn't work.

It's an idea that gets kicked around a lot, but no such capability currently exists.

Problem with breaking pre-made things down is that you'd then have another skill up attempt for free.

Would be true unless only one of the two components were returned like either the gems or the bar. Say a file, water, and a gem'd ring in a forge sensibly could produce a gem, perhaps even one of lower quality.

But I can imagine the idea's already been suggested to sony and since there isn't a process in place they probably won't do it.

There are already recipes that can return multiple results -- e.g., the recipe for Loaf of Bread can succeed, fail, or fail catastrophically, resulting in a burned loaf of bread and the loss of your bread tin. This was confirmed in the last couple of months as still being active -- I remember a recent rant about that here.

Maybe we could suggest that the reversal randomly returns either the gem, the metal bar, or neither. That way, you get (at best) one extra skillup attempt per two items you break down. Removes a LOT of the munchkinism involved, but it becomes pretty expensive, too. It would be more profitable, I think, to sell the jewelry to a vendor and buy new components for a fresh attempt.'

          Just a random thought.
