When making lacquered gems, on a fail do you lose both jem and lacquer or just the lacquer?

And it hurts! I've lost a lot of money lacquering star rubies for the star ruby encrusted steins I've made to skill up in pottery. At 200 JC you'd think it wouldn't be so bad, but...oh well.
