  • Jewelers glass lens

    Greetings,
Is anyone having isues making a jewelers glass lens? I just failed 6 combines, 300 skill + Master's Trophy. I did 2 combines in a collapsible jeweler's kit last night, 2 just now, then 2 more in a planar jeweler's kit.

Each time I failed I was returned a Glass Disk, and 2 Grinding powders.

Just wondering if you all see something I'm not, or can verify a bunk combine.

the lens has a high fail rate returning all stuff to emulate the long, tedious and precise work needed to make a lens.

The recipe also has this note:

"This has a very high failure rate even when very trivial. According to Dev-Ngreth this is to emulate "the need to keep grinding it to match YOUR eyesight"."

Man! If I have to start :

          1) Sizing people for cultural footwear (Would Madame like to see something in a pump?)
          2) Checking inseams on leggings (Sir do you "dress" left or right?)
          3) Measure for breastplates (Would you like a Wonder BP or a demitasse?)

I will be making crap till the balance melee.

"to emulate "the need to keep grinding it to match YOUR eyesight""

If you are looking for realism then this is not very accurate. Eyeglasses need to fitted to your eye for the simple reason that they do not magnify objects (unless you are talking bifocal lenses) but rather correct for you eye defects. The simple magnifiers that jewelers use, called a loupe or jewelers glass, does NOT have to be made special for any person any more than a magnifying glass does. The reason being is that it is a simple magnifier and you are able to move the object as close to, or as far away as you need to achieve the correct focal lenght to get a clear focus. So that doesn't make sense in a realistic way to me.

"emulate the long, tedious and precise work needed to make a lens."

The first lenses were not really precise, they usually just fractured a mineral (say quartz) until they got a piece that worked. You can make a simple magnifier very easily with water. Or with a glass jar and water. Not that it matters I guess but Nero actually watched the games with an emerald (unground or doctored) as a simple lens.

Perhaps some people just don't get the concept right (making the eyeglass) until they do it multiple times.

The cost is low and the item only has to be made once. If it bothers you that someone of your skill level had to do multiple times, just fib and tell everyone you got it on the first combine.

Doesn't bother me in the least (I wonder where in my post I said I was bothered about skill vs success?). A statement was made about realism, which to me isn't very realistic and I commented upon that.

"Perhaps some people just don't get the concept right (making the eyeglass) until they do it multiple times."

This makes no sense. So what is the point of trivials? So, the RNG knows this and will only effect some people?

How about it is more realistic than "Stick a piece of glass an grinding powder in a bag and poof you get a lens"

This is a ground lens, not a fracture lens or whatever. It takes some grinding.

Maybe the specific wording is not correct, but it is still a fact that lens grinding *can* take some time.

At least in the end you can't ruin it like you can in real life.

And on top of all of that I can only go for *some* realism. Not exact realism.

Just thought you and other would like to know. I wasn't asking for anything to be changed. It just seemed like some people had a misconception about lenses in RL that is all. I don't expect a video game to reflect RL in every aspect.

And isn't a stack of powders 100? Yes you weren't the only one that bought a stack rofl. Think mine was 5 trys and 95 resale to vendor(was awhile ago).

I got mine on the second combine. I was expecting a long tedious bunch of combines based on this thread. I still have 98 grinding powders.
