  • Jewelers Glass Lense

Sorry if this was covered already, but I coudln't find it with the search.

This item Jewelers Glass Lense Shows as triv 50. It has a note that it has a high fail even when triv'd and I've seen it directly as the case....So what gives?

Wasn't this sort of thing hard coded out? Something to the effect if you have 200 over you wont fail?

    Thanks for any info

I did it a couple times and both times it took me about 2-3 times to sand the glass enough to get the polished lense (with 300+12% skill and JCM3).

If you read the text on it it says that you may have to repeat the sanding process multiple times to achieve the desired result. So it's not so much of a high fail rate (though that's the result) as showing a more... well, RP is the only way I can think of it... RP aspect to the tradeskill. I like it, adds flavor.

Hmm RP... uh hmm well lets say I buy that. Would it not stand to reason to make it "harder" by increasing the difficulty aka triv? If its trivial then its trivial not pain stakingly hard to succeed. They went out of their way to code low trivs not to fail, now to undue it? I'll wager its just a bug that got over looked.

If they raised the trivial, it could become a skill up path that was cheaper then anything else.

Come on, it's one item out of hundreds that you have to hit the combine a couple times just to get the final product, the pieces are all vendor purchasable for < 10p and you only have to do it a few times unless you're incredibly unlucky.

IMO it's not something to get riled up over.

And RP really wasn't the best word for it, it was just the only one my addled brain could come up with at the moment.

If you fail, at least it gives you 2 powders back of the 3, so you're really not losing much of anything except time (at least I always got the glass + 2 powder back).

It's there as a tool for future use, not as a skillup path IMO. He could have just made it a vendor purchased one, but this way we get to make our own tools and that appeals to me personally.

300 JC here, and I had to do it about 10 times before I got the final product. However, I just looked at it as the fact that it really needed alot of grinding / polishing to get a high quality glass.

And that is all I was trying to convey.

That is takes lots of grinding to make a lens. And I did not want to have to create a line of say 8 different items and 8 recipes. So instead I gave it a high fail rate to "emulate" this, and made sure that the failure return was the starting items (minus the "used" up dust) With the extreme repeatability of this, I could not make it a high trivial.

Remember how many lenses your optometrist has to try to correct your vision. This is what you are doing with a single lens for your character's vision. Bet that's why no one else can use it

I totally understand not wanting to make a pile of new items that are essentially the same thing and can now see why this was done the way it was. I agree applying a high triv would allow a far too easy a skill up path and coding it to not give skill ups would be even more problematic. I appologize for my knee jerk reaction to a low triv with a high fail rate, but that change was something I whole hartedly agreed with and was proud was fixed only to see it undone. I would just hate to see this special circumstance take a turn for a trend which resulted in us ending right back where we started from with fails on stupidly low trivials. Thanks for the answer/discussion.

I will only use this method in special cases. And any time I use the min fail mechanic, for whatever reason, I give some lore as to the reason The lore here was the need to keep grinding it to match YOUR eyesight

Heh,my eyesight must be horrible then. Took me at least 15 combines to get this thing polished sufficiently (modified skill of 274).
Still, an amusing change, I like it.
