  • Question about Attenuable gems

I apologize if this has been covered elsewhere, a quick glance did not reveal it to me.

I have been unable to combine the suggested components to make, for example, a Brilliant Cut Emberflow Stone in the suggested container. I continue to receive the message: "You cannot combine these items in this container type!"

Which container, you ask? I have so far used a regular, old world Jeweler's kit, a new-fangled Planar Jeweler's Kit, and a collapsible Jeweler's kit to no avail. I was able to make the polished versions in each of the aforementioned containers. I am perplexed.

252 JC skill, w/trophy no JC AA (as I am a Cleric)
    currently level 66 with 360Wis

    Pls hlp!

I apologize. Yes I am using a gem cutter as well.

I heard something about needing to have a rogue or shaman do this combine? but that seems a bit far-fetched. Guild chat tends to be a lesson in qualitative logic at times.

You have to have a rogue or a shaman to do the following steps but you don't need them for the gem cutting.

Best suggestion is to spell it out for us: "I put X, Y and Z in such in such container" so we can see what you are missing instead of just guessing Because I'm betting you are missing something in the suggested components list that you just haven't noticed yet.

I am putting the polished gem, the hydroabrasive, and the gem cutter into a jeweler's kit and getting nowhere.

This is supposed to make a brilliant version of whatever polished gem I insert (or fail miserably), but I can't do the combine apparently. Or can I?

You need the raw aug to cut it. I.E. you either polish it, brilliant cut it, or radiant cut it. You can't polish then cut, or vice versa.

Then once you either have your Polished xxx, Brilliant Cut xxx or Radiant Cut xxx, it goes onto the Alchemy/Poisonmaking stage.

Once the gem is cut once, it cannot be cut again. You can't take a polished gem, and then cut it to radiant. The next step, the etching, is done by a rogue or a shaman.

                Trivials and Item loss

I have only recently obtained my gem cutter, yet I'm hesitant to attempt this cutting step on augs for friends. I noticed the trivials on these are well over 300 for the higher two cuttings. Will the aug be lost if I fail?

I don't want to lose the aug, especially someone else's! I'm going to put some AA into Salvage, but I suspect this will still leave me with a high rate of failure.

Any advice, suggestions, or information about the rate of loss of the augments would be appreciated.

The aug WILL be lost if it fails. Best bet? Get jewelcraft mastery 3 (if you're an enchanter) and salvage 3 and cross your fingers. Cut augs are much better than non-cut augs.

You have a choice of three different cuts -- polished, brilliant, radiant. Better the cut, the better the result but the tougher it is to cut it.

When you attempt the cut, be grouped with the people that you are doing the cutting for -- then they will see what succeeds and what fails and if anything was salvaged. If you display the "expert jeweler" title, then they know you are 250 skill, and if you show them your grandmaster trophy and equip it, then they will know you got as good a chance as anyone to make the item, and then it's just luck, good or bad, to if you succeed or not.

My philosophy on this is that the vast majority of the augments are worthless unless you cut them (except to those peeps that try to sell flow stones for 20-30k in the bazaar). And the augments are much more common than the components you need to add focus effects to them. So I've been cutting away! I do have JCM3 and Salvage 2 though... Have yet to see a Tourmaline drop, and would probably have to think about this one. (I'm 0 for 5 on the gem type stones.)

0 for 5 on the gem type stones with jcm3 and salvage 2? YOUCH.

I am 0 for 4 on Radiant cuts, with 252 (modded) skill and no AAs.
                        A guildie is 0 for 3, with 252 (modded) and JCM1.

The success calculator here says we -should- be succeeding about 40%+ of the time

You are using a polished gem, which is why you are failing. Once the gem is cut (polished), you cannot cut it again.

I gave someone 4 stones and he was 4-for-4 turning them into radiant cut (well 3-for-4 technically, but one was regained through salvage). Then I made a nice cleave 2 aug out of one of them.

I find this very sketchy as well sometimes. My chanter is 68 with 250 skill, 252 modded with torphy, JCM3 but no salvage, i've attempted 7 Radiant Cuts for my guildie, failed first two right off the bat, and have made the last 5 successfully, which i find kinda weird, but i was happy nonetheless.
